    Insanity and the Mistake Trap

One common and troubling form of insanity is, "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results," warned Albert Einstein.

Iraq Is Not Delightful, Mr. President

I thought perhaps someone somewhere in Washington would have informed our chief executive that grinning like a mental patient on television might not be the best way to express concern over the violence in Iraq

Brown: Politics played role in Katrina

"Unbeknownst to me, certain people in the White House were thinking, 'We had to federalize Louisiana because she's a white, female Democratic governor, and we have a chance to rub her nose in it,'" he said

Big business joins greens to pressure Bush on climate

The biggest hold-out against radical policy change is probably the Bush White House.

Thanks, an interesting set of links. Especially that last one, I had no idea that our corporate masters (and I mean that in a nice way, in case they are reading this) had changed their minds on global warming. Google turned up this link with some more details. Who'd have seen this coming a year or two ago? Good news as far as I can tell.

    My conclusion:

MarinJohn lives is a [physically] very beautiful area of the country, yet lives a sheltered existence of eating, drinking, and sleeping political discourse.

Apparently he as nothing better to do.

    How insane is that!

Usually I'm not the most cynical around here, but when a large company changes a position like that, it usually means they have something to gain from it. Perhaps GE is looking for some government 'research' money, or has a product that could be sold if only the government would make it mandatory.

One chemical multi-national is said to have supported the ban on certain types of freon ... because it had a patent on the alternative. Imagine that.

Like I said in the title, draw your own conclusions and you did.

    Today's agenda:
Got up extra early to fit in a full schedule...

    House cleaned top to bottom
    did light gardening
worked at my business only four hours (usually, this time of year I work every waking moment 7 days a week)
took a hike (excuse, walk the dog, get exercise since I'm not a gym bunny)
did my daily reading of left, right and international publications
helped neighbor jump start her truck
checked back on PC, writing this at 11:30am
    still to do:
Shop and cook for the 15 friends coming for intellectually stimulating dinner
host game night at my house till late into the evening
bring cookies I baked late last night to local school for bake sale (school money gone to bombs)

Put it another way...home, mind and body maintenance. Donate time to neighbor, PC and school. host dinner, intellectual discussion and party for 15 guests, and clean up afterward.

You may envy my lifestyle, but if this is a life of leisure, please shoot me!

Put it another way, no bars, no tv, no whining about how others choose their daily schedule!

    FLAT-EARTH ECONOMICS.
    Equality Bites
    by Jonathan Chait

If there is one trend in American life that most irks economic conservatives,
it is probably rising inequality. It's not the inequality itself that bothers them,
as most will happily admit. It is the perception of inequality and, worse, the
constant discussion of inequality that is so irritating. It offends their view of
capitalism, helps justify all sorts of nefarious government interventions, and makes
the conservative economic agenda (most of which tends to increase inequality)

    Hillary Pilloried

Hillary Clinton will say or do anything to get elected. All that she
seeks; indeed, all that she lives for is absolute power. She has demonized, henpecked,
browbeaten, slurred, exaggerated, lied, and bullied her way to where she is today
with no indication she is about to stop now.

What's So Bad About a Warm Winter?
    By Patrick J. Michaels

That, coupled with the people's general satisfaction with the warm winter and their
prosperity as the planet warms, should provoke the real debate concerning global
warming. If, in fact, we can develop technology to choose the planet's mean
temperature, where should we set it? I don't know the answer, but that's the question
society will ultimately wrestle with as it enjoys warmer winters, and finally
acknowledges the futility of attempting to stop warming with impotent legislative acts.

    Windsurfing to Guantánamo
Who knew that protesting American oppression could be such fun?

Nevertheless — and despite relentless allegations to the contrary — the evidence
indicates they are treated humanely, even leniently. "Not a single case of torture
or inhumane treatment has ever been substantiated,†Rear Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr.,
the commander at Guantánamo, told me and other visiting journalists recently.
“We are the most transparent detention facility in the world."

Bush's New Iraq Strategy is All About Striking Iran ...
    By Hashem Al-Karar

Bush's new Iraq strategy is not intended for Iraq. It is really a new strategy for Iran,
after the failure of Washington's dual containment policy which was designed specifically
to prevent that country from obtaining The Bomb. MILITARY STRIKES ARE INEVITABLE

The story goes that America will not attack Iran because if it did, the more than 130,000
American troops stationed in Iraq would become hostages overnight. But this story is
nothing but good fiction. Don't fool yourselves, folks. The strikes are coming. What was
billed as Bush's new Iraq strategy will become Bush's Gulf War IV strategy.

Brownback: Goal To “Try To Get The Supreme Court To Be One...That Would Be Willing To
    Overturn Roe V. Wadeâ€...

Kansas Senator Sam Brownback appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos to discuss
his candidacy for president. On the subject of the judiciary, Brownback said, "I think
really the track one right now is to try to get the Supreme Court to be one that's limited
in its perspective, that it remains a strict constructionist Constitution group that's on
the Supreme Court, that would be willing to overturn Roe v. Wade."

Embattled, Bush Held To Plan to Salvage Iraq
In Face of Advice, He Pushed Buildup

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had a surprise for President Bush when they sat down
with their aides in the Four Seasons Hotel in Amman, Jordan. Firing up a PowerPoint
presentation, Maliki and his national security adviser proposed that U.S. troops withdraw
to the outskirts of Baghdad and let Iraqis take over security in the strife-torn capital.
Maliki said he did not want any more U.S. troops at all, just more authority.

The president listened intently to the unexpected proposal at their Nov. 30 meeting,
according to accounts from several administration officials. Bush seemed impressed that
Maliki had taken the initiative, but it did not take him long to reject the idea.

Not Only the Worst President, but the Worst Possible President By Jane Smiley

Bush is the worst possible president because he is simultaneously unusually ignorant for a
president and unusually shallow, as well as desperate for a success he can call his own.
