Is it OK to leave the cable (for iPod) connected to the aux jack without anything plugged in while the car is idle?

yes, it's fine. leaving the cable pluged into the consol (with or without something pluged into the other end) will not cause any damage, drain the battery, or anything. i just leave mine pluged in 24/7. it's easier that way.

Thanks Eagle! I will do the same. The position of the aux jack makes it a pain to plug in every time I get in the car.

As others have said, yes it's OK, no problem there.

Having plug inserted into the AUX jack is what instructs the audio system to include AUX in the audio options. If you leave a plug in there, then AUX will be in the sequence when you press the MODE button on the steering wheel. If you have nothing playing on the AUX, no loss, just one more press of the button needed to get from CD to AM. If this irritates you, then unplug the plug.
