Victoria - The B.C. government is trying to shed some light on fuel cell technology by spending $25,000 to outift staff at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria with flashlights powered by hydrogen.

"Hydrogen and fuel cell development are driving new private sector investment in British Columbia, providing both jobs and technology for a healthier and more prosperous future," said Energy Minister Richard Neufeld, who unveiled the demonstration project Friday. "Our government and the hydrogen and fuel cell industry are working together to advance British Columbia's vision of hydrogen fuel leadership and to build our world reputation in fuel cell technologies."

The B.C. government has been putting development money into what it calls The Hydrogen Highway, a program that is designed to publicize the use of fuel cells and encourage the creation of products that use the emerging technology.

"This project is proving that the hydrogen and fuel cell industry is making the transition from prototypes to commercial products," said John Tak, president and CEO of Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Canada. "B.C.'s Hydrogen Highway plays an important role in showcasing the broad spectrum of fuel
cell applications - from flashlights to back-up power to vehicles."
