B designation on shifter

    I'm in the early stages of Prius envy. Not an owner yet and my only experience was a brief test drive with a dealer.

    My question about the gear shifter symbology is as follows:

    I believe it has a B, D, R, and maybe and N - if I recall correctly.

    I get what D,R, and N would stand for, but what about B?

    Salesperson said it was for "Battery" and that the car would only operate under battery power in that mode. Is that true?

    If that is true, what is the purpose of the EV button retrofit I keep reading about?

    I think you should try another salesperson if he can't even tell you what "B" is.

    Yes, B is for engine braking like 3,2 or L (depending on transmission) is on a regular automatic. Also, in "B" the engine will not shut off when stopped or idling. Use "D" for 90% of driving like you would on a normal car.
