I drove a 2005 Prius this evening and am thinking about buying it. Do the batteries under the rear seat ever produce a gas or smell that gets in the cabin of the vehicle? Just looking at it from the safety aspect.

Not that I've noticed after 5 years.

The batteries are sealed tight. If any gases were able to escape, that would be bad. Very very bad.

The 12V battery's in the trunk but it's vented overboard. The traction battery is sealed like a NiMH rechargeable.

    No.

If they did, the HV battery has its own outside air exaust. They are black plastic tubes and you have to somewhat take the car apart to see them. Normally this is used for cooling, but it would handle any other gas just the same. The 12 volt battery also has its own air exaust. That's what the little tube by the 12 V. is for.
