"President Bush and Rick Wagoner, Alan Mulally and Tom LaSorda suddenly are best buddies. The president had little time for the Big Three last year, when they wanted to talk about the United Auto Workers and health care costs and how legacy liabilities were killing off the U.S. auto industry. The president appeared happy to let Toyota become America's automaker if GM, Ford and Chrysler couldn't cut the mustard."

We keep hearing how these "legacy" costs are killing the U.S. automakers. Well, I suspect that the real problem was that the greedy automakers never invested workers' retirement entitlements as they should have done, instead paying themselves bloated salaries, and assuming that the next generation of managers would merely pay those costs out of operating revenues.

If the entitlements had been properly invested, the "legacy" costs would be paid today from those investments, and would impose zero burden on present-day operating costs.
