I searched in FHOP but haven't found a discussion about John McCain's little parady of the Beachboys song. Did I miss it? When I was looking through the Imus thread, I saw some reference to bombing Iran, so I thought it might have gotten mixed up there, but apparently not. So I apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? I was surprised it didn't get that much attention in the media. I guess it might have gotten buried because of the VT shooting. If Imus's remark had occurred during that time, I'm sure he'd still have his job.

Frankly, I was shocked that McCain could make a joke about bombing another country and get away with it virtually unscathed. I understand the context in which he made the joke -- and I'm pretty sure he just meant it as a joke -- but I'm also sure that to millions of Iranians and all the people in Iraq and Afghanistan where we HAVE bombed, it was not a laughing matter.

I don't understand what's happened to McCain. I used to admire him, but have lost all respect. He's gone senile or something.

By the way, I believe that parody version of the Beach Boys song dates back to the Iranian Hostage Crisis. I know I remember hearing it many, many, many years ago. However, that fact doesn't have bearing on whether McCain should have jokingly refered to it; just a little bit of trivia.

I agree wife and I both liked McCain years ago when we lived in Phx. AZ. but he has changed and sure do not want him in office.

McCain's performance was about as funny as the time that Reagan didn't know that his microphone was on and he "joked" that "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes."
Regardless of one's opinion about the war (the current one in Iraq, or the possible one with Iran), war is never funny, and bombing people is no joke. This only serves to illustrate how callously the current administration is willing to attack other nations while giving little thought to the consequences.

The VP, by definition speaks for the administration. The post didn't mention Bush at all... It is nice, however, that the right has this great term they can throw out whenever someone says something bad about Bush.

Please explain how "the current administration" is responsible for McCain's joke... That is what was implied. As I have stated before, B.D.S is symptomatic of the belief that George Bush (or "the current administration") is responsible for EVERYTHING you don't like.

Agreed; in my opinion, he's succumbed to the idea that the only way to energize the Republican base is with NeoCon rhetoric. So, in a sense, the current administration and its supporters ARE responsible for influencing/changing him.

I also used to be a fan of his, but I fear that some form of bitterness is getting the best of him.

Okay -- so who suffers from this? Bush (and his administration) or ? (I still don't get it.)

BTW, I agree we can't really blame the administration for McCain's joke -- but in recent days he does seem to be becoming more and more its spokesman.

Anyone who found McCain's "joke" funny must also chuckle appreciatively when Iranians joke about bombing Manhattan; it's the same joke, after all, which only jokers of like mind would laugh at.

Sounds like you're the one with BDS... The "current administration" does not equal Bush. Instead, it encompasses the entire Bush administration - Bush, Cheney, their aids and advisor's, etc. As Cheney is part of the administration, and in fact he's second in command of the administration, he speaks for the administration as a whole. While i agree that what he said was most likely in jest, it doesn't excuse the fact that people in the administration are willing to jest about attacking another country.

Dick Cheney and John McCain are not the same person. I know they're both balding, but they really are different people. John McCain did the "Bomb bomb Iran" thing, not Cheney. Cheney has nothing to do with the news story.

I blame my previous ridiculous statements on work... I've been bashing my head into one problem here for so long that i'm not thinking straight. I saw one thing, thought another, and never bothered to check myself this time... my bad.

forgetta bout it... NP. Also, sometimes, getting away from a problem for a day or so (if possible) can help clarify what direction to go.
