did they give you the pad measurements? do you need rotors? are they working okay? making any noise?

 

Need a price breakdown to comment on dealer price.
What labor rate for example?
Are your rotors worn out or still within spec?
Do it yourself is the most economical.

2 ft rotors
2 re rotors
pad set
brake flush
emergency brake adjustment
caliper pin replacement - seems to be a known issue.
inspect/clean or replace caliper piston boots - always caked with brake dust and possibly dried out.
inspection and grease or replace wheel bearings (needs new seals) - I also think the wheel bearing are a known weakness - yet I am unsure.
Don't forget a proper bedding procedure!

For DIY I also believe there is a special procedure to disconnect the ABS computer - yet I am unsure.
I believe one is to disconnect the 12 volt battery before brake replacement.
I am also unsure if a Toyota Handheld Scanner is required to open any brake circuits or reset systems.
Also not sure of any special tools required, yet a caliper piston retractor may be helpfull.
(Rant - I sure wish Toyota sold a service manual other than on-line subscriber fee access)

The above list would be a start as to what could be required.

I'm not sure either rotor or caliper pin replacement is warranted. If the rotors are in good shape, and nowhere near mininum thickness, why replace??

I've done rear's (long story). The pads were just under $100, and shims under $17. Replacement of the latter was not really warranted, but they were so nice and shiny.

I would expect front pads and shims would be about the same, maybe a bit more. So, front and rear pad and shim cost: $250~300, at most. This is Toyota parts, through the dealership, in Canada, the home of inflated prices.

So, front and rear brake job, just cleaning everything up, relubing the pins, putting in new pads and shims: $400~500 would be reasonable.

 

It is an steep price, are you getting replacement of what?????

The car can be treated like any other, in terms of brake jobs, once you put the car in a special mode. Almost $1000 is INSANE for a brake job.....crook dealer

 

If you don't have the ability to do the work yourself, see is a brake shop or an independent mechanic will do the work.

Since every other car in CA is a Prius, I'm thinking that getting a lower bid should not be a problem.
As stated above, $400-500 would be the most I would pay for this service IF DONE CORRECTLY, and for less than $100 in parts you can do it yourself.

Sure they do. A LOT of places try to sell you a complete brake system rebuild whether you need it or not.

Chances are that all you need is new pads. On a car that old, if not driven in a winter salt bath, the rotors and calipers probably are still good for another 100K.

Ask them exactly what NEEDS to be done and why.
Then get a second opinion.
