    Just wondering....

I still don't have the SSC-40L Brake Light Switch Recall letter. I saw a post which seemed to imply that the startup sequence for the Prius depended on the brake light switch confirming that the brake pedal was pressed. This seems to indicate that a bad brake light switch could prevent starting.

Anyone have info or an opinion?

    The short answer: Yes.

See this thread for more discussion on the phenomenon...

    THANKS for the response....

I'll get after my Dealer to go ahead with the replacement.

Not all cars qualify (need) the fix. Mine didn't based on VIN, and I have an August '04.

I mention this so that you don't get the switch replaced and get charged for it because it doesn't qualify for recall.

To be more explicit: have the dealer check to see whether the recall applies to your VIN. Or call 1-800-TOYOTA and ask them yourself (have your VIN at hand). Or wait for a recall letter from Toyota (recall letters are VIN specific).

I have the letter - and can't get mine in till next monday. Problem is the cruise light has begun to flash now as a side-effect (possible fault w/ brake switch). Hoping it's safe enough to drive till then.

I believe the correct number is 1-800-GO TOYOTA

    Re: Break light switch recall

I never got a recall notice regarding SSC 40L.

I called the number above (1-800-GO TOYOTA) and gave the person at the other end my VIN number. Indeed, my car was subject to the recall.

I have had notices of three other recalls, but not this one.

Anyway, I took the car in and had some routine maintenence performed.

They round a rat's nest in the air filter compartment under the hood, with nuts and so forth. No rats however. I shall use some rat poison in an attempt to dispatch the critter(s).

In any case, my main recommendation is that if you hear of a recall and have not received a notice, it may not mean all is okay. Call the number to be sure.

    Hey DOC,

I notice that you're from San Jose - you didn't by any chance, have your car serviced by Capitol Toyota, did you? I ask because they recently told me that my cabin air filter needed replacement when I had in fact, replaced it a few weeks earlier.

I am curious if you actually SAW the rat's nest.

My faith in their service department is kind of gone...
