I have rented a Toyota Prius 2008 (I think). Today, I switched on the car, stepping the brake before switching... and the brake light was in red.

I can move the car, but I have the feeling that the brakes are working, so I have stopped the car.

I do not know how to switch off the red light (and the brakes), or if I have to call my rental company because there is a serious problem.

Sorry for my English (I am not American). Any idea will be appreciated,

    david

The emergency (parking) brake may be engaged. Try stepping on the pedal near your left foot.

Also the parking brake may not be returning to its rest position. I had a similar problem when an electrical cable got tangled up with the pedal lever. Look underneath the dashboard to see if anything is keeping the pedal from returning to rest.
