Brakes Chirping At Around 10K

    I only have about 10,500 miles on my '06 Prius, and this morning the brakes started chirping. Sounds like it's coming from the rear brakes. Sometimes it even continues for a while after I let off the brake. Doesn't happen when I apply the brakes while I am backing up, though. Has anyone else had this happen with so few miles on their vehicle?

    EDIT: warcat, gbee42 and hobbit are both much more technically savvy than I, so I would advise you to try their solutions first before giving any consideration to the service bulletin.

    The rear brakes are drums, which self-align when backing up. That will account for them not making noise in reverse. Try cleaning off the rust by using the friction brakes on an open piece of road. Shift into N and give the brake peddle a firm press. Repeat this a couple of times and see if they sound any better.

    In the Prius, the rear brakes self-adjust [if needed] any time the
    hydraulic cylinder activates. They're a little different. See

    I went to the dealership this past Saturday. They cleaned the brakes & that seems to have taken care of the problem. Doesn't surpise me that they needed cleaning. Up here in the Texas "Pothandle", a lot of the roads are more suited to four-legged horsepower :)
