WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers' demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.

Thursday was the deadline for surrendering the documents. The White House also made clear that Miers and Taylor would not testify next month, as directed by the subpoenas, which were issued June 13. The stalemate could end up with House and Senate contempt citations and a battle in federal court over separation of powers.

"Increasingly, the president and vice president feel they are above the law,'' said Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. He portrayed the president's actions as ``Nixonian stonewalling.''

His House counterpart, Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., said Bush's assertion of executive privilege was ``unprecedented in its breadth and scope'' and displayed ``an appalling disregard for the right of the people to know what is going on in their government.''

The investigations are part of the Democrats' efforts to hold the administration to account for the way it has conducted the war on terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Just Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office, demanding documents pertaining to terrorism-era warrant-free eavesdropping. ``It's an outrageous request,'' White House press secretary Tony Snow said.

``It's pretty clear that again members of Congress are engaged in an attempt ... to try to do what they can to make life more difficult for the White House,'' Snow said.

The <strike>Bush</strike>Soprano Administration. They were elected by the supreme court and re-elected based on fear and bullying. They lie, cheat, steal and kill, then cry like a baby when anyone challenges them. This is not what Washington and Jefferson envisioned. This is no longer our country.

Life imprisonment for these fascists in Gitmo would be good reason to leave that hell hole open.

I understand Cheney is also resisting compliance. All sorts of excuses to be exempt. The latest is that he's sorta kinda like the President so he gets the same privileges.

Cheney puts himself above the law.

"Cheney claims he is neither part of the executive branch nor the legislative branch and thus is accountable to neither. When he doesn't want to comply with a presidential directive, he's part of the legislative branch. When he doesn't want to turn over information to Congress, he's part of the executive."

    Reagan lawyer: Impeach Cheney.

"In grasping and exercising presidential powers, Cheney has dulled political accountability and concocted theories for evading the law and Constitution that would have embarrassed King George III. The most recent invention we know of is the vice president's insistence that an executive order governing the handling of classified information in the executive branch does not reach his office because he also serves as president of the Senate. In other words, the vice president is a unique legislative-executive creature standing above and beyond the Constitution. The House judiciary committee should commence an impeachment inquiry. As Alexander Hamilton advised in the Federalist Papers, an impeachable offense is a political crime against the nation. Cheney's multiple crimes against the Constitution clearly qualify."

I've been saying that all along.

First get rid of Cheney.....THEN get rid of Bush.

Remember, Bush is a uniter not a divider. What would this country be like without his leadership and that of the vice-president ? Since they don't pay that much attention to the laws of the country maybe they can run for a 3rd term. There are a few things they have not had time to mess up yet.

You could topple our current Congress with a feather; I'm not surprised that he's still (on the) offensive.

Like him or hate him, President Bush knows how to get what he wants. He's *really* good at spotting weakness in others and exploiting it to his/his party's advantage.

Apparently the FDA considers it above the law as well.

"For years, the public calendars of two top federal drug safety officials were largely blank — devoid of the required detail about their contacts with the industry they regulated.

Open government experts and lawmakers said it is only the latest example of the lack of transparency at the Food and Drug Administration and a violation of the spirit of open government. The FDA attributed it to administrative oversight."

"Once notified by the congressional staff, the FDA began to retroactively fill in the calendar. It showed that the two had met during that period with drug company executives, lobbyists, patient groups and others."
