Today, I ordered from Toyota an inside/cabin air filter for my Prius. It is an extra option here. How about in North America? Is it a default option and how often do you change it?

Umm, without buying it as an option, do the cars have the opening for it?

Looking at the filter to check for loose stuff like leaves now seems like a good idea on a quarterly basis, but changing it doesn't seem to be needed more than maybe yearly...

    Here's John Fagnant's article on it (John1701a.com)--

Should tell you all you need to know about changing it. I changed mine at about 20k miles...not sure if it was absolutely necessary or not that early. If you drive in dirty/dusty conditions and it seem to get dirty and accumulate junk fast then change it more often.
