That's awesome! I always wanted to do something like that. Unfortunately, there really are no HOV lanes in my commute!

Better to put a baby seat and doll in the back. Just tell the officer the baby is sleeping when you get pulled over.

It reminds me of a scene from an episode of The Simpsons:

Dr. Nick.... walks inside the hospital, and finds his way into a boardroom.

    Riviera: everybody!
    Board: [unenthused] Dr. Nick.
-- At a malpractice board hearing,
    "Twenty-Two Short Films About Springfield"

Chairman: Dr. Nick, this malpractice committee has received a few
complaints against you. [reads from clipboard] Of the 160
gravest charges, the most troubling are performing major
operations with a knife and fork from a seafood restaurant.
Riviera: But I cleaned them with my napkin.
    Chairman: Misuse of the cadavers.
Riviera: I get here earlier when I drive in the carpool lane.

I always wondered if people did that. Guess they do. I wonder how many times he got away with it.

A year or two ago a woman was on an LA radio station (KFI) saying that her unborn child counted as the passenger so she should be allowed on the HOV lane.

Unfortunately that would make her guilty of two infractions that would get her a ticket in any case. One, it's illegal for more than one person to be behind the steering wheel and two, it's illegal to have more than one person use the same seatbelt.

Haha. That's hilarious. I seem to remember Sharper Image used to have a dummy in their catalog that they said you could put in your passenger seat. I don't recall if they suggested using it to use the HOV lane illegally, but I think that a lot of people considered getting one for that purpose.

I remember that. I think the reason was to give the illusion that you weren't driving alone for safety, but maybe people used it for this reason too.

Yeah I think they marketed it to women as a way to deter people from trying to carjack them or something.

    This just kills me:

"Thompson then placed the dummy on a freeway shoulder to deter other commuters from similar schemes."

    1) People see a legless dummy on the shoulder of the road, wearing a Miami Dolphins windbreaker no less, and they're expected to immediately conclude that they had better not put one of those things in their passenger seat in order to circumvent HOV lane usage rules?

    2) Laws have been enacted restricting cell phone use while operating motor vehicles. Such use distracts drivers, as the argument goes. I suppose placing a legless dummy on the shoulder of a highway would somehow be LESS of a distraction for motorists than using a cell phone........(imagine drivers who were BOTH staring at the dummy AND talking on their cell phones).

    3) Is there a law in CA that provides the CHP with the right to confiscate dummies after stopping cars using HOV lanes without authorization? A ticket, sure, but confiscating this kind of property? It's not like it's contraband or anything.

If ya ask me, I think the guy just hates the Dolphins. The offender should have dressed the dummy in a Raiders jacket.

More than a few times I've passed Illinois State Police patrol cars parked on the Tri-State Tollway with a dummy in the driver's seat. It works too because you can see people braking when they notice the car and a figure in it.

It can be seized to be used as an evidence exhibit in court. It will be returned if its owner moves the court to release it, after a trial or a guilty plea, and the prosecution cannot offer a compelling reason why it should not.

Actually, if there were a collision under those circumstances, it would also serve as an air bag.

Which brings to mind the stupidity of the definition of a carpool as "two (or three) persons per car". It should be two or more adults per car.
