Can a 2009 Prius tow 1000 lbs and 700 lbs of people and gear?

Well my scooters are made by the other big name big wheeled scooter company from Italy called Aprilia I have a trailer that's made out of plastic and aluminum that weighs 330 lb empty I have towed my $500 and my 150 in that trailer behind the generation 3 but not with 700 lb of additional gear in the car and people there was just two people and pretty much no gear and it wasn't a lot of fun in the North Carolina hills on flat land not too bad If you're willing to not try to set speed records probably not a huge issue till you hit the hills but that is a good bit of weight it may do it but it's not going to be real happy about it I generally just bring my 500 with me and leave the smaller scooter at home these littler 10 and 13-in wheel things are usually a little bit lighter my scarabeo is the size of a BMW fully bagged touring bike One of the most beautiful things ever made on two wheels according to many reviews

 

That's too much.

Your car can safely stop about 1000lbs of stuff or people.

You've got two trips worth there.

 

If the trailer has brakes, maybe.

If not, then no.

 

Hopefully the transmission can hold up...try driving steady and true!

But you know the rule...if you have a Prius, it's mandatory to, also, own a Tacoma or a Tundra!

 

I guess it's time to sell the Prius? Not enough money for a Tacoma or Tundra.

Don’t want to inherit someone’s towing workhorse vehicle, with knackered engine/transaxle. Probably does a number on suspension, brakes, wheel bearings too.

 

You won't know for sure until you try!! Many times, the stress of extra weight can be compensated for by going slower. It may be a slow drive, and big hills may be challenging, not to mention going down the other side, but the trip is up to you!

I'd definitely try to get the cog of the bikes over the axle or just a hair forward of it. Maybe not that big of a deal with all the extra weight in the hatch area though, to keep the rear tires where they belong.

 

There are more than enough vintage F-250 workhorses in my extended family to skip having my own pick-em-up.

Ya, I'm thinking that with the way things are, used is a bad idea anymore. Now you have a lot of people not changing the oil on time and then selling their vehicles, and CarFax regerstering it as if it were changed enough times! You can't trust anyone anymore. I have no idea what I'll do when I need to replace the Avalon and I'm not looking forward to that day.

 

It's not just the weight, but also the aerodynamic drag. My brother-in-law once towed a light, but boxy shack behind his Corolla. That didn't go very fast either.

 

So does this mean no towing campers behind prius?

 

That depends on the camper. But generally I would not recommend it.

 

I would get the car up on a lift and check all the suspension, especially in the rear. I'd, also, change out both the engine and transmission fluids and check for any metal stuff in the transmission fluid. Also check the wheel bearings, especially in the rear.

You can borrow my Tundra for you next haul...she used to tow a 33-foot camper that weighed 8,000 pounds up and down Colorado Mountain passes with no problems! (We now have a 5,000 pound 22-footer that we enjoy just as much!)
