Canadian Oil Changes now 1 year/16,000km**

    **Scheduled service is still 6 months/8,000km but the oil only gets changed every 12 months/16,000km with full synthetic 0W-20 (and not the semi-synthetic blend used on our Gen 3s).

    Service #1: Basically a routine check up (Do visual checks on brake pads, tire depth, lubricate locks/hinges, check wipers, horn and lights etc, top up fluids) including tire rotation [It's back as an included item? It was made "optional" as an extra cost a while ago]

    Service #2: #1 + oil change

    Service #3: #2 + remove brake calipers and inspect and measure brake rotors and pads, inspect valve clearance (Audibly), check steering gear, linkage and shock absorbers for looseness, damage or leakage, inspect fuel system for leaks or damage, inspect condition of fuel tank bad, fuel tank cap gasket, fuel tank vapour vent system hoses, fuel lines and connections, inspect exhaust system for leaks, damages or broken hangers.

    @Tideland Prius Yeah, you're right. The "services" bounce back and forth between #1, #2 and #3, and only #2 and #3 have an oil change. I also see the notice "scheduled maintenance is based on mileage", full stop, so maybe no time factor.

    FWIW, I've always used Toyota 0W20, and the bottles have always said "synthetic". I think I'll continue with the 6 month interval, at kilometers so low I'm embarrassed to publicly disclose... But now getting my oil at $3.85 a liter (for bulk oil) through the parts department, my DIY changes are very cheap. Maybe I'll do the filter just once a year, compromise.

    This is the Honda regimen: change the filter at every second oil change. I tried to get a nearby dealership to go by the book on this, and they practically had me arrested, lol. Anyway, the way I do it is to pour out and re-install the filter once, change it the next time.

    Oh interesting. So oil could be changed longer than 1 year apart?

    No, I've got the warranty booklet with me. It lists both time and mileage. No different from before.

    There are two additional booklets that are similarly named. They're both "supplement" booklets, in addition to the owner's manual and the navigation manual. The owner's manual reads like a novel now. The navigation manual used to be the thickness of the owner's manual.

    Yes, I found the Warranty booklet pdf quite easily, but not the Maintenance one. :(

    Being 3rd gen, I'll carry on with that proscribed 6 month or 8000 km interval (DIY). I think even with a 4th gen I'd do the same, claim it was severe service (low usage). I've gotta have something to do every 6 months.

    Semi synthetic explain why toyota oil is cheaper in Canada than US. They give canadian cheap oil and call for more maintenance $$$$

    Toyota 0-20W and filter change every 5 thousand miles, I would rather be safe then sorry. Honda Civic, follow the Maintenance minder, 0-20W Honda semi synthetic about 7,500 and oil filter every time, I don't agree with changing the oil filter every other oil change and neither does the dealer.

    My 06 civic's maintenance minder said service "A" one time (change oil only), then service "B" the next (change oil and filter). Always one, then the other. Yours was different?

    2015 Civic, I get the A and B as well, but change the oil filter everytime, as the dealer advises this, too many miles to go every other oil change.

    In my 2015 the service calls for tire rotation at 5k and rotation/oil change at 10k.

    I often wondered about the extreme frequency of TOYOTA service - in Australia, Mercedes Benz specifies:

    "Mercedes-Benz service intervals have been set to ensure you get the best performance from your vehicle over its life. - All engines except AMG and V12 variants: 25,000km / 1 year".

    On the BMW forum, discussing "CONDITION BASED SERVICING", and it's called for service as far apart as three years/26,000 miles.

    I'd have thought that with an engine as clean and unstressed as the PRIUS, that oil changing wouldn't be as important as in either a diesel or a high revving TURBO engine.

    I have always suspected that the amount and frequency of service was exaggerated so as to increase revenue to the dealership/authorized garage.
