I'm looking into getting my first prius. Bottom line, my wife and I have a 1 year old and we do a lot of camping.

Is it worth spending extra money for a 3rd gen that supposedly has more space and all the nice features (that aren't a necessity)? I'm talking a $5-6,000.

We'd also like to strap a kayak up top.

Do 3rd gens have a noticeable difference than 2nd gen as far as cargo space goes?

Anyone experience would be nice to hear about.

To clarify - $5-6,000 price difference between the two generations that I've found

Gen3 is a bit more space than Gen2 but don't go by the reported cargo space numbers, because they changed method of reporting cargo space when Gen3 came out.

But we are a little cautious about well used Prii, as there can be some costly repairs. 2009 was a good year I'd say (last of the Gen2's)
