Inspired by iplug’s Max Regen Downhill thread (Max Regen Downhill | PriusChat), I thought it would be fun to have a throwdown in which PiP owners post photos of their impressive regenerative braking feats. We’ve got a higher capacity battery than the other Prii. And hey – we paid big bucks for it. So let’s show it off!

I’ll start the Cars-in-Bars Photo Throwdown with an easy one to beat. This is a short commute that started by climbing elevation along Hwy 280 in the SF Bay Area, followed by exiting the Hwy and 10 minutes of medium downgrade. Speed limit downhill was 45 MPH, so it was a blend of coasting and braking. 9 ½ bars, or 0.45 kW in 10 minutes! By my calculations, that’s faster charging than a Level 2 charger!

Be safe. Don’t be taking pictures of your multi-information display while driving the car.

I am a little better, steepest I have is for about .5-.6 regeneration!

    12.5 regen cars x 50 Wh = 625 Wh

You did regen more than a regular Prius NiMh battery can hold.

Looks like I'm the only PIP geek who's into the Cars-in-Bars Throwdown. No problem, I can play with myself.

Here's a photo that answers a question I've had since owning the PIP: Can the MFD display cars above bars? Or is that not part of the software. Well, today I got the answer: Cars-Above-Bars! See attached photo.

I continue to be impressed at the charge speed provided by the PiP's regenerative braking. 825 wh in 30 minutes blows away a Level 1 charger and nearly equals a Level 2 charger.

By the way, the above post sets the bar for most regen in a 30 minute window. :D

How much will a PiP show after a descent from Colorado's Pikes Peak? Or Dantes View to Furnace Creek in Death Valley?

I expect folks will be able to suggest more descents of 5000+ feet.

Despite those regens, you still got 64 MPG. That won't be possible with a regular Prius.

hit some stop-and-go highway traffic today on 880 south. got one bar with 5 cars and another with 5.5 cars. mind you, this is on essentially flat terrain. a regular prius wouldn’t be able to do this at all.

I am not sure it is relevant to anything. What really counts is additional miles regenerated that are usable in EV. A 7000 foot drop from Reno to Sacto only produces 5-6 miles regen, which is quickly depleted in the numerous small valleys on the way down. With stop and go city traffic, 50WH cars appear constantly, but you are also using the energy in stop and go. A 2 hour drive across city traffic in Chicago might produce a 100 50 watters, probably with the ICE constantly on.

The point here is that in a regular Prius you wouldn't be able to regen as much and therefore would get lower fuel economy overall. This is why the pip gets better mileage on the highway test compared to the liftback.
    Here's the photo btw

Whoa! Jumpjet rules the throwdown with 37 cars in bars! Darn close to the theoretical max of 48 bars in 30 minutes. Nice photo.

I continue to be surprised at how fast regen charging can be. Jumpjet's 1.85 kWh in 30 minutes is around double the charge rate of a level 2 charger.

Makes you wish they didn't cheap out on the on board charger, doesn't it? Just think about it, if you could charge at 220/40A, you'd have a full battery pack in less than 30 minutes.
