Catalytic Converter Thief Stole Heat Exchanger Too

    2010 Prius. The thieves stole the whole upper exhaust system, from the exhaust manifold joint on past the the heat exchanger. Catalytic converters and heat exchanger are gone. Coolant lines are cut.

    I don’t need a CARB-compliant fix, and I see several aftermarket catalytic-converter-only options available. But none of these have the heat exchanger/coolant line connections!

    Can’t post a link, but for example,

    “MagnaFlow® - OEM Grade Direct Fit Catalytic Converter”

    or

    “Walker® - Ultra™ Direct Fit Round Body Catalytic Converter and Pipe Assembly”

    How can I even use one of these without the coolant line connections?

    What’s more, I can’t even seem to find anywhere which sells the heat exchanger part at all.

    I am aware of this thread, but I am hoping for more explanation than is there. Catalytic converter coolant question. Would joining cut ends of coolant lines with hose work? | PriusChat

    What do people do here?

    I don't see why just connecting the gozinta to the gozouta would not work. You'd only be giving up the faster-warmup advantage from the heat exchanger.

    Possibly that would lead to a trouble code about the heat exchanger (B1503 from the combination meter), but I don't think that's likely. (I think the code gets set when the temperature reading coming back from the EHRS is wildly unreasonable, but if just joined with a hose, it's going to closely match the temperature circulating in the engine.)

    @ChapmanF Thank you for your intuition about the code possibilities!

    Is it possible to buy an aftermarket heat exchanger part and get it welded in?

    Toyota only sells the heat exchanger as a part of the catalytic converter and exhaust pipe system.

    No. Only Toyota sells the heat exchanger.

    It's the hassle and co-lateral damage from the idiot thief who does not know how to do a "clean" removal that led me to install the shield.
