How do you remove the trim piece around the gear shift? There is a rattle coming from inside there and I want to take this off so I can see inside and maybe fix it.

It is just pressed in with clips.

When I pulled mine apart I used a small scraper covered in the blue masking tape to not scratch everything.

Pry gently upwards on the seam closest to the driver's leg (black plastic) and it will eventually pry off. Work from that edge gradually towards the passenger side. There is an electrical clip on it too. You don't need to remove it if all you do is lift it over the shifter. From there, you can remove other sky bridge cover plates, if need be.

Rattle chasing is elusive at best especially in summer.
