Found it interesting that this blog turned up some supposed claims that i can't find anywhere else on the net (in fact, google says there's a website for the company, but it's completely blank...).

All the same, it's a rather interesting idea - use some sort of genetically engineered microb to split water and extract hydrogen?

Sorry, Charlie. The chemical bond that unites oxygen to hydrogen is at a lower energy state than the isolated hydrogen and oxygen by themselves. This means that you need to add energy in order to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Talk all you want about electrons and genetic engineering, the fact remains that breaking that chemical bond requires energy. And you have to get that energy somewhere. Sure, there are microbes that can do it. All plants do it. They use sunlight as the energy. There's nothing new there.

I think a better approach is to put larger wheels on the back of the Prius so it can glide downhill all of the time. ;)
