We need to buy an extra key fob to have at the house. My wife and I each have one on our keychains... but it is common that we are out together each carrying our own keys. When that happens... the kids might need keys to the Prius... so we want an extra set of keys sitting at home.

If it is much cheaper... and if it wont screw up anything.... I guess the extra fob does not have to be an SKS... but I would rather buy an SKS fob if the price is not that different.

Where is the cheapest place to buy an extra fob? Can I get it online someplace cheaper than from a dealer? Can I gt the mechanical key cut locally, and then program the fob by myself? Thanks in advance.

    Wow.
You're willing to spend a 2-3 bills just so that,
on rare occasions when you forget to give your kids a fob
and they actually need to go somewhere
and can't get there any other way,
they'll be able to use your Prius.

    Don't mind me. I'm just frugal. :p

We don't exactly plan who is going to have which keys. I have my personal set of keys... my wife has her set as well. It seems reasonable to have an extra set of keys in the house so that when we are both gone, someone else can use the car.

We do keep an extra set of keys for every car in the household... except for her Z4... because the kids are not allowed to use it. The Prius doesn't fall into the same catagory.

I found one online for about $150 from a dealer.

I want to get a 3rd one and give to my dad. In case something happens to both of the keys there is a 3rd one available in case of emergency.

Just goes to show that what one perceives as a luxury another may perceive as a necessity.
Clearly spending a couple of bills on this doesn't seem excessive so more power to you. :)

Clearly I would prefer a $1.79 solution from the local hardware store... but that is not an option with the Prius. For us... that does not negate the need for a spare set of keys to have at the house.
