In the last month or so, I had the check hybrid system occur on the display console appear 3 times, to over ride the system message I removed the orange plug by the hybrid battery pack twice as well as remove the main white fuse cable in the fuse box by the engine, then the message appeared again for a 3rd time, I took the car to the dealership, having it diagnosed for why the problem keeps appearing on an occasional basis.

I was then told that the hybrid battery pack has a few cells which are not functioning correctly, hence it is recommended to replace it with an entire new battery pack.

After getting a quote from the dealership, the price for a new battery pack is rather expensive, so I would like to know from others who experienced such a situation, is it better to get a new battery pack or get a reconditioned battery pack, as I discovered that there are businesses which can recondition a hybrid battery pack.

Feedback on this matter will be very helpful.

    Thanks

    Welcome to Prius Chat(y).

    Some questions:
    • Did the dealer give you all of the diagnostic codes?
    • How many miles on your Prius?
    • Any other recent maintenance?
    • Any other recent incidents or damage?
    • Did the car drive fine or were there some drive ability issues?
    • If there were, what were they?
Before I would replace the pack, I'd want more data and I go from the source of that information;).

Good luck and keep us posted(y).

Only report I received was the status of the battery pack and cells, no other report was given. Vehicle currently has 97873km, has a full service history from Toyota dealerships. Only other maintenance done on the vehicle was the replacement of the front brake pads. *NB* the vehicle is a late 2009/2010 model - advanced.

There has been no driving issues and vehicle has been driving fine, only when the check hybrid system light reflected did the driving change, since the petrol engine was running consistently.

Any advice on the issue would be greatly helpful.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for updating

Do I replace the entire battery pack or can it be refurbished

There are many ways to answer that question;).

    Some things to consider:
    • Are you the DIY type?
    • Do you have another vehicle if your Prius is down for periods of time?
    • How reliable of a repair do you need?
    • How much longer do you want to keep your Prius?
Answers to these questions (and more) will help you determine the next steps for your situation.

@2k1Toaster makes a kit of brand new cells that can be installed. A brand new battery from Toyota is also another option:).

Good luck and keep us posted(y).

There isn't many options in refurbishing the cells or getting items easily here in my region (South Africa) to do the task myself.

After doing much needed research and getting info, I've been left with no choice but to get a new battery pack from the Toyota dealership in my area.

Thanks to all for the support
