    Scary.
One million is a huge recall.

    quote:
    Tuesday, December 21, 2010—...
... Toyota Recall 05V389. The 2005 recall to replace defective steering relay rods in the United States came almost a full year after the Japanese manufacturer issued a Japan-only recall for the same trucks. Nearly 1 million trucks in the United States were affected by the recall.
Federal law requires a manufacturer to notify NHTSA within five days of determining a motor vehicle defect or noncompliance.
Toyota’s internal records show that the automaker was aware of many relay rod failures that occurred in the U.S. well before it issued the 2005 recall. However, Toyota told NHTSA they were not issuing a recall in the United States because they had no field information as of 2004.

Toyota Delayed Steering Recall By Almost A Year In U.S.

NHTSA has now linked 16 crashes, three deaths and seven injuries to the steering rod defect. When a steering rod snaps, the driver cannot control the vehicle because the front wheels will not turn.
Toyota told the AP that it has now confirmed seven total cases in the U.S. of steering problems in the T100 small pickup and no reports of accidents or injuries.

Another scary one. Even the luxurious Lexus is not immune.

    quote:
Toyota announced a new recall on Thursday involving some 412,000 Avalons and Lexuses in the United States for steering problems. The recall is the second announced this month by the Japanese automaker.
ome 373,000 of the recalled cars are 2000-2004 model year Toyota Avalons. The vehicles' steering interlock system can develop a crack which can expand, making it hard to unlock the steering system when the cars are parked.
In rarer cases, the steering wheel can become locked when the cars are moving.
    ...
Toyota says it's aware of six reports of steering problems with Avalons, including three unconfirmed minor accidents and no injuries.

Well, at GM they are doing it right. Instead of a steering rod snapping off where you can't see it, they make sure the steering defect is real obvious. Can't get any more obvious than the wheel coming off in your hands......

I really tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but now I reach the same conclusion most others have: you're a pure troll.
I think it's time he was vacationed. He adds absolutely nothing to these forums whatsoever.

In GM's defense, they have only been making steering wheels for about 100 years - they just need to get the production kinks worked out.

Every part that falls off is of the highest GM quality. But, come to think about it, it is probably not American made.

This is awfully suspicious of GM knowing that the wrong wheel was installed and ignoring the issue until the report of one falling off.

Can you imagine getting hit in the face by the steering wheel as the airbag deploys when you run into something?

Yes, he needs to be banned. For those who haven't paid attention to all trash Prius posts tpfun has been making, these below are pretty accurate descriptions of him and his behavior.

Besides wasting his own time, he wastes the time of others who end up reading his posts and those who to respond to set the things straight. His crap, the resulting responses and the back and forth are cruft that impede people trying to find information.

It seems he's trying to instill Fear, uncertainty and doubt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia into newbies and potential Prius buyers.

His posts add virtually 0 value to this forum and pollute it.

Classic troll by the very definition posted elsewhere. Unfortunately many people, like me, are attracted to trolls like moths to a flame and we are but powerless not to respond to them in their thread crapping tangents.

But sales are quiet, the showroom's empty, he's buffed the cars, had a coffee and it's still an hour to lunch so he thought he'd hang out with some friends :D

He likes the attention which is quite sad really.

Actually, it's a way to prevent rods and other steering components from being subjected to stress which might cause their failure; thereby, endangering the occupants.
