    Commercial pilots know to avoid frisky clouds, and often have on-board radar to supplement radio information. Clear-air turbulence has been harder to detect, and often makes the news because passengers hate to keep seatbelts on (even loosely).

    LIDAR could help with this, and Boeing is on it:
