We do record the country of manufacture of every tire that we test, but we donâ€™t report it in our tire reports for a couple of reasons. First, the same country may not produce the whole tire line--different sizes may be produced in different countries. Weâ€™ve even seen tires of the same model and size built in different locations and countries (note the Kumho Solus KR21 in the list below).

Second, we also face issues with space for magazine pages and it does become a currency issue of keeping that information up-to-date--again not just for our size but for the entire model. Listed below are the complete listing of models just tested for the November issue of Consumer Reports.

I was very surprised about the country of origin for some brands. I, for instance, knew that Continental is German, Kumho is Korean, Bridgestone is Japanese but was surprised to see Contentinals and Bridgestones from Brazil and Kumhos from China and Vietnam.

I think it even goes beyond this: The tire manufacturers may have more than one plant within a country, and the quality of the tires from different facilities can vary.

Example: When the Firestone tires on Ford Explorers were investigated by NHTSA, they found that the tires from one plant had a higher failure rate than the same size and model tires from other Firestone plants.

I can say "Yes, I know where my tires are made" I've had good luck with Cooper's.
