The problem with counter battery systems (i.e., those detecting incoming rockets and artillery) is they need a radar emitter making them vulnerable to anti-radiation sensors and weapons. But these weapons are typically supersonic and an audio array on two orbiting drones might do the trick.

The distinctive supersonic crack detected from two points with a directional vector would allow calculation of the source. Then counter battery fire should 'solve the problem.' Passive, there would be no way to attack the sensors. Heck, an array around the perimeter of an area would be even more effective and stealthy.

Might work against mortars, but people whose armor consists of cotton shirts usually shoot those, and the more stupid (or unlucky) of these sort die quickly in combat, leaving you with the smart ones who won't sit still while you're trying to suss out where they're at.

    Besides...
Drones don't practice EMCON, meaning they're usually very easy to detect electromagnetically, at least the low fliers.

Aural detection has already been tried and found wanting in other applications for a couple of reasons not the least of which are terminal maneuvering and hypersonics in the case of missiles - recently field-tested by the world leader in these types of weapons.
Missiles can move really REALLY fast these days and they don't follow easily predictable parabola.
I only wish we didn't have REAL missile-gap c-2020 that might prove to be worse than the faux missile gap c-1960.

Aural detection and TMA works quite well in some environments and when weapons are operating at sub-OFG speeds.

If you're getting counter battery, then (a) you're already actively shooting and (2) you've been detected and targeted - or? they're just ripping loose some shots to give you something to worry about and hoping to draw you out.
The Rooskies are actually pretty good at this, and word around the campfires had it that it might or might not have been part of their doctrine to put a weapon in the water (or in the air) just to make you flinch.

    Either way?
It's time to stop doing ESM (electromagnetic surveillance) and do some ECM.(counter measures.)
