I have just started getting junk email to my in box using my priuschat name of MarinJohn. This is the only forum I have used that name. SOmehow they retrieved my email address using my user name (they're not related). The junk email I am getting contains attachments which I am never going to open, but I'm willing to bet if I did I would get a virus. Danny, can't you protect our personal email addresses from further intrusions? MJ

I'm willing to bet that you emailed someone here or replyed to an email from here and it had your PC name in there. Now that perosn you have emailed has a virus sending you crap. If that makes since

Don't assume that any of your email addresses can possibly remain
"hidden" if they are valid and you've banged them in anywhere. Just
assume they're all well-known to the cleverest possible spammers,
and improve your filtering capability and best-practice back home.

Similarly, I have been receiving credit card applications, mortgage solicitations, and other unwanted crap using my PriusChat user name.

If, by some odd chance, you WANT a lot of spam, get a hotmail account.

After the smartest people on the planet got done with their spam filter, I get significant spam in the inbox, and of course, if anyone new happens to email me on purpose that email will be in the junk box.... along with another flood of other junk mail so I can't find it.

Are these companies not putting in the time to kill spam, or do they somehow profit from it, so it's being allowed at the current levels?

Well, I use different e-mail addresses for every single place I go to on the web - just let them all get sent to my catch-all address. The address I used to sign up for PriusChat hasn't been used for anything BUT registering for PriusChat - I give out certain other addresses in posts, or via private messaging.

I've not received any mail to that particular address except notices of personal messages. They might have been able to access a list of usernames and public e-mail addresses, but at least my private address hasn't been spammed yet.

Actually, I first saw that joke while growing up in Decatur, Illinois, smack dab in the middle of Mid-west corn country. I love to leave it lying around in random places at work and watch people get VERY confused. I live in AZ now, so very few people ever get it on their own.

I use a Yahoo email address, and their spam filter is excellent. Very few spams get through it. Unfortunately, it is pretty aggressive, and occasionally some legitimate email gets through, generally when a new friend sends a bulk mail. E.g., someone I met on a hiking trip emails pictures to everyone who was on the trip.
