I work for a company that makes waterjet cutting machines, so I whipped this frame up this week. What do people think? I really like how it looks, and it will look even better once I have a plate for the car. Picture below.

Are people interested in buying these? What do you think they should cost?

My first post! (just got a silver #6 last weekend)

    Nice job!!

 Would you be able (interested) to make a custom frame with a simple, custom design for me or others?

It depends on the design, material, whether the drawing is already electronic, etc. I was already planning on doing copies of this one, but with your username on top instead of mine. I have a few font choices too.

What do you have in mind?

Also , the finishing hasn't been worked out yet. Mine is just spray painted, but I would want to have it powder coated or anodized in a real application. I currently don't have the resources to finish them nicely like that. I can figure it out if there is enough interest.

    Just text.

    Above the plate perhaps PriusChat.com.

Below the plate something like Just Sippin' Gas

Finish isn't too important, but durable is better obviously. Price wouldn't be too much of a concern since I realize it's custom work.

I'll start the bidding at 368 points!!

That looks awesome! Very clean, very nice. I like that it has your username much like HAM radio people have their call numbers on their plates. Peoplr who come to PriusChat can actually look you up. I would want something other than my username since it is actually my real name.

Work out that finishing and we'll talk.

Congratulations on your new #6! It's awesome. Let me tell you, you will never grow tired of SKS. Being able to have your arms full of stuff and still open the door is a dream. And it's darn fun, too.

I added a poll to see what people would pay. I won't be making a ton of money on this, but I do want to know what it is worth to people. It took me a few hours and prototypes to get it the way it is now. I have priced out raw materials, and can do these in lots of 15. Once I get orders for some, I can do them fairly quickly.

I am trying to find someone in Washington (or elsewhere) that will do the finishing work on a small run of parts like this. I could also ship them raw for a lower price, if someone want to finish thier own.

    Options:
PriusChat logo will be on either top or bottom
custom text (username or slogan) is in other location
I have over 2000 fonts, though some will not work for this application.
    Logos are possible.

Please remember that the mounting holes up top make it hard to wedge text in there.

All designs can be proofed before I make them.
Danny - how much do I owe you for using the Priuschat logo?

I was just playing around and made up some plates with personalized text. It's just various sizes of Eris Demi ITC. I went with green text because I liked the way it looked.

I batantly stole some of the slogans from members of this board.

I really need to see if there is interest in this, so I know to invest the time on sourcing the material, etc.

I will need at least 5-10 orders to make this go.

    Local group frames.

I'd be interested in a frame for the local San Diego Prius club.

Maybe S.D. Prius Club on the top and Priuschat.com on the bottom.

Perhaps the other local groups would be interested as well. Seems that would be easier for both bulk production and bulk purchase.

It's really just as easy to make each one unique, since they are made by waterjet.

I should make another sample and bring it to the next WA meeting.

    Reposting a picture.

Others had replaced my name with various slogans:
    Just Sippin' Gas
    Tomorrow's car... Today!

I can't remember all the others

I also may be able to do:
    Zero to happy in 50MPG

    Space is pretty limited

How about PriusChat.com on the top and
OCPrius.com or Orange County Prius Club on the bottom?

    I'm in, engunneer.

In fact, I wonder if Danny would be interested in taking it on (with you as
subcontractor?) as a PriusChat project. Especially since nothing seems to be happening with the shirts. :(

I had been thinking about how to come up with something simple to spread the word---nationally, even if just in widely-separated places---about PC. I had been thinking of some Priuschat business card that a lot of us could give to our local dealers, say, 25 at a time, if they'd be willing (through their management, obviously, not some critter) to give them to Prius buyers.

But this is a different way to go.

We'll never agree on a consensus slogan, so I'd suggest leaving the top blank. People motivated enough can come up with stick-on letters spelling out whatever they want to, e.g., local club name, political slogan, etc.

If you still want to go the slogan route, let me throw out:

    MORE CAR, LESS OIL.

If this doesn't pan out, let me throw out that you can buy, at many auto parts stores, a plain black, smooth frame with a set of adhesive letters to put your personalized "message" on top and/or bottom. It's about $8. On mine I have

    50 MPG

    AND CLEANER AIR

I've had it on 3 Priuses in 4 years, and no letters have come unglued.

Since I'm making them on a waterjet, they can be completely custom, with a custom font too. I'm thinking of having a few plain ones for ~$15, "boxed" slogans for ~$20, and complete custom for ~$25.

If you need two, I can come up with some kind of discount for that.

Those prices could vary, but I think it's a good starting point. Custom ones take me a little time to draw, but they would be OK'd before purchase for anyone who wants that.

    A note about construction:
These are made from aluminum, about .075" thick. The letters are cut through with waterjet (detail down to about .050") and there are painted parts behind to give color.

I am willing to do custom outer edges too, like scalloping, or what-have-you. This would be included in the ~$25 model.

I prefer to leave the PriusChat logo on the bottom edge, but can make it any logo you want, in theory.

Whip something up in paintbrush and save as a jpg, if you want to see what I can and can't do. Feel free to email it to me, engunneer _AT_ gmail.com.

I'm also looking into custom vinyl decals. I've seen "carbon fiber" vinyl decals shaped to partially cover the center brake light. I can proabaly make those for ~$10. I will have to make one for my Prius so everyone can see a pic. I think it would be great if the brake light lit up and said "55MPG" (see ebay seller "coolbrakelights" for an idea of what I mean).
These can have custom logos too.

I need firm interest of about 5 people to make the first batch. Email me, and put the words "Prius Frame" or "Prius Decal" in the subject, so that I can monitor interest. At this point, it will take me at least two weeks to make the first batch.

Good price point. How about doing the front one as a mirror image so people can read it in the rear view mirror? :D
