Posting for my daughter. Bought a used 2005 Prius for her a month ago. She had the 12v battery replaced and since then she has no dashboard lights (no speedometer, gas gauge, etc) it has come on a couple times since the replacement but not consistent. She's had 2 completely different diagnosis but from self admittedly non Prius mechanics. Any advice? Should she take to Toyota dealer?

The failure is a common failure with the Prius when it ages, it's a bad combination meter. You would need to replace that unit (or fix it via some youtube video instructions). It involves soldering a new capacitor onto the combination meter.

You can get repaired unit from texashybridbatteries.com, they offer them for $150. But you have to do the work in removing it from the car and installing the replacement unit. There are youtube videos on how to do it, but be warned, you might end up breaking some tabs that hold the AC vents together, they are very fragile on a 15 year old car.

Thanks for the information. I'd seen references to this on other posts. We will look into replacement.

+1 for a bad capacitor on the Combination Meter (speedometer assembly). It happened to my 2006 almost immediately after replacing the 12V battery.

You can read the "stickied" thread near the top of this forum: "combination meter repair- diy" for more information.

Since the dealer still wants crazy $$$ for a new CM, your choices are to pull it and repair it yourself (if you have decent soldering skills for surface mount components), pull it and have TexasHybridBatteries repair (or exchange it), or have a shop pull it for repair.
