Ok i bought my used 04 prius with 40k miles on it and now i am hitting 125k year and a half later. I havent done any maintenance on it except for oil changes. now should i take it to a dealer or could i just take it to a autoshop such as pepboys or something.

If you have a high quality busy general auto guy that's familiar with and has worked on hybrids (esp. Prius) in the past you're probably OK. But you definately need to have some things done. PSD and Inverter coolant replacement are foremost in my mind...the inverter coolant in particular is a tricky procedure that requires a full purge of air to be successful.

IMO, I'd go to a Toyota dealer, pay them the exhorbatant money they'll charge you and make sure you get everything done and everything checked. At the top of this forum there's a sticky about what services you really need and which you don't...but since you've done nothing since 40k you probably need a LOT.

I'm a mechanic but I'll probably take the Prius in to Toyota dealer to service the car at 100,000km (60,000m) I'll get them to change the HSD fluid and coolant then and each 100,000km there after.

You're a mechanic? Those are straightforward services. They will take half an hour, if you have the car on a lift.
