Dealer Overfilled the engine oil by 1/2 inch above the max mark, should I be concerned about it?

    Yes. Have them remove some,

Since I regularly check oil level, I only keep mine fill yo the mid-mark on the dipstick.

No engine I know would be hurt by that. The worst that could happen is that the excess oil would get blown out the breather. But this is highly unlikely in my opinion.

i bought a hand vac and removed the excess through the dipstick tube after each oil change

You don't think that's a waste of a good vac?

Maybe it was a Mity Vac?

I've never heard it called a hand vac. I think a cheap syringe would work better.

it's a little manually operated pump, only a few bucks back in the day

I wouldn't want to suck engine oil into my hand vac.

i bought it specificaaly for the job, after i saw that they were overfilling on every oil change.
after 12 years, the free oil paid for the pump plus some

That's not my idea of a "hand vac," however I don't know why anyone would be bothered by a little overfilling.

I had one guy wreck an engine that way, but he filled it to the top of the valve cover.

idk how much oil half an inch is. manual says not to overfill. i'm no expert, i'd rather be safe than sorry

I'm more inclined towards common sense.
The road to hell is paved with "better safe than sorry."

My MINI doesn't even have a dipstick, lol.

If you don't already have a pump with thin enough tubing to get the overfilled oil out through the dipstick tube, a cheap $4 Walmart fuel oil two cycle mixing shrynge with a length of aquarium air line tubing is all you need.

Go to the auto parts and pet supplies departments.

Actually in my Gen2 I had significantly reduced MPG when I did that... Also my 18hp Briggs&Stratton Twin engine once had too much oil put in it by my friend and wouldn't run smoothly until he drained some out. Also here's chatgpt on all the bad things that happen when an engine has too much oi:

    ⚙️ 1. Crankshaft Aeration & Foaming
    • When the oil level is too high, the crankshaft dips into the oil in the sump while spinning.

    • This whips air into the oil, turning it into a foam.

    • Foamy oil cannot properly lubricate bearings, camshafts, and other moving parts.

    • The result:
      • Increased friction

      • Bearing wear

      • Overheating in friction areas

      • Oil pressure fluctuations (you might see the oil light flicker)
In a Prius, where the engine cycles on and off frequently, these effects are magnified — oil doesn’t have time to de-aerate before the next restart.

    2. Excess Crankcase Pressure
Too much oil raises the oil level above the normal crankcase ventilation range. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system starts sucking up oil mist instead of just vapors.

    That leads to:

    • Oil entering the intake manifold

    • Contaminated throttle body and intake valves

    • Oil consumption or burning oil smell

    • Carbon buildup on pistons and valves

    • Possible damage to the catalytic converter over time (due to burned oil residues)
In hybrids like the Prius, which use Atkinson-cycle engines, low vacuum and small PCV orifices make this especially problematic — oil mist can easily migrate into the intake and pool there.

    3. Reduced Fuel Economy (MPG Drop)
    You already noticed this one.
    Overfilling oil causes:

    • More drag from the crankshaft contacting oil

    • Foaming (less efficient lubrication)

    • Incorrect PCV airflow (affects combustion mixture slightly)
That drag and mis-lubrication directly reduce efficiency — especially noticeable in a Prius because the engine already runs at tight tolerances optimized for low friction.

    4. Seal and Gasket Damage
Excessive crankcase pressure (from oil foaming or vapor expansion) can force oil past seals and gaskets, leading to:

    • Leaking valve cover gaskets

    • Rear main seal leaks (costly)

    • Oil seepage around timing chain cover
Once a seal leaks, it often stays that way even after correcting the oil level.
    5. Catalytic Converter and O2 Sensor Contamination
When oil gets sucked into the intake and burned, it can coat the:

    • Oxygen sensors, causing poor feedback and rough running

    • Catalytic converter substrate, reducing its efficiency and shortening its life
The Prius catalytic converters are expensive and tightly monitored by the ECU, so this can eventually trigger check-engine codes (P0420, P0430, etc.).

    ️ 6. Other Subtle Effects
    • Cold-start smoke or rough idle (oil residue in intake)

    • Misfire codes if oil fouls spark plugs

    • Premature aging of PCV valve (oil contamination shortens life)

    • Higher oil consumption later, since oil may have washed down cylinder walls or degraded valve seals

That's all true, but the engine would be poorly designed if it couldn't tolerate filling the oil slightly above the full mark.
