How are the fog lights on the Prime? 3rd gen, they're pretty much ornamental.

    Ornamental .

But the headlights going to LED makes a world of difference :).

    One of the better features(y).

Those are "driving" lights, which means they are designed to fill in the sides and closeup in front. (Fogs have an entirely different purpose, cutting through difficult to see precipitation & humidity.) They do a very effective job in that role too. I find them quite helpful in the winter, providing extra light for seeing snowy terrain.

When I test drove an Advanced/Limited at night, I could barely tell the difference when the fog/driving lights were on. The LED headlights provide excellent illumination by themselves. I was unimpressed with the extra lights.

Mediocre benefit for fog. Nevertheless, I leave them on all the time (all the time that the headlights are on, that is) because I find that they help light up the curb a bit better.

My ride sharing buddy with his Supra (in the eighties) had excellent fog lights.

Sorry for the thread derail: the salesman in video mentioned fog lights and I perked up.

We've all been there. Salespeople are by no means good advocates of technology. Just think of how much misinformation there still is about new-to-shopper tech, like Dynamic-Cruise or Lane-Keep. It's really disturbing when you think about how often a customer is told something totally incorrect. Ugh. Adding to that the new-to-them tech like the 120-volt charger...

Another herky-jerky out of focus video with bad volume. Did notice the guy has hairy arms though. I like the fact that he is show casing the Prime. No dealers seem to be doing this. Great idea, get the college students with professional equipment to shoot it.

Toyota doesn't think so, and they built the car. From the owner manual:

"The fog lights secure excellent visibility in difficult driving conditions, such as in rain and fog."

And I agree with toyota. The fog lights are for extreme conditions, where the normal lights just get bounced back to you, they're lower so they don't get backscattered. I very rarely use them, but when i need them, I need them! (and I live where I hit fog conditions a lot, but not very much extreme fog.)

The correct setup for fog lights (and how we used to wire them ourselves) is to run the fog lights with the parking lights, with the main headlight beams off. Then the only forward facing light is down low without the reflection from the main beams. I don't know of any production car that allows this now.

Agreed, headlights off is the proper way to use them!

    Perhaps in Europe.

The parking lights on my '86 Buick were better fog lights than those on the Prius.

And you know all too well the owner's manual is a reflection upon the general market, not a specification document. Another example is how the label of "CVT" is used. It's exactly how you'd expect a dummies guide to read.

Can it be that Toyota is not omnipotent and flawless? Shocking.

Edit - how can the salespeople be expected to know much if the owners manual is inaccurate. As you noted, "It's really disturbing when you think about how often a customer is told something totally incorrect."

Proper, not illegal. At least here anyway.
