A question from someone who does not yet have a Prius:

Anyone have the dimensions of the internal cargo area (i.e., with the rear seats in their upright and locked positions)?

I know it's volume is 16.1 cubic feet; but much Googling, PriusChat searching, and even a scan of the Owner's Manual, fails to provide this information.

The reason: my partner is involved in stage combat, and she wants to know, with the luggage cover hiding the luggage compartment, whether she can fit swords, rapiers, sabres, and the occasional broadsword in the cargo compartment.

    Thanks in advance!

Research shows that my fencing bag full of rusting epees (it's been a while) fits just fine.

A quick check with the tape shows with the seats in their upright and locked position, approx:

38" width at the narrowest on the door sill
    28" front to back
    With the slope on the hatchback;
17" top-to-bottom at the door sill and
    23" top-to-bottom near the seats

    Hope that helps,
    Jay

Those were the narrowest dimensions; so they're a bit on the small side! Now, if you're moving styrofoam peanuts or molasses, you can probably get the full 16.1 cu. ft. in every nook and cranny!

Either one would make a big mess! :)

By the way, have you checked into James Toyota in Moses Lake? We got our Driftwood #5 there about a week ago.

I'm going to check with my broker (car, not Merrill Lynch) to see if he's monitoring James Toyota, as well as the other. I'd be happy to drive out there, they have a great reputation, and I noticed that white #7 that just came in yesterday. If white wasn't "right out", I'd have considered it.

I was working through a broker in Portland, too. I left a message for him, too, asking if he checked out Moses Lake white #5 for one of his other customers. Never heard back from him.

Next day James Toyota called *me* with a #5 Driftwood available. I feel like the broker had his chance. It was on a Friday, I gave James my $500 deposit over the phone and picked up our new Prius in Moses Lake the next day!

I'm sure the broker was doing his best between December and March, but I'm thinking now he's probably only getting the "thirds" not wanted by dealers or anyone on the dealer's waiting lists.

As of mid-March he had only gotten 1 Prius in 2004 for his customers and the last one he got went for $2000 over MSRP. :-(

Welcome to the "I bought my Prius at James Toyota in Moses Lake" crowd! You're in GREAT company. They are a good crew. It is funny that Toyota is sending them so many prii.

By the way, my dealer called last week. My Prius White #9 BC came in and was ready for me to buy. :( I remember specifically telling them that I changed it to a Hylander on my Drive home from Moses Lake, WA (didn't give all the info such as that I already bought my car.)

But I just couldn't justify having a second Prius when there are so many people on the list. So, I told him to give it to the next person in line as soon as I got the message. Someone went home happy this weekend I hope.

Wow, I thought my drive of 300 miles to Moses Lake, and 300 miles back home in our new Prius was a long way, but Xo Larimer must have driven his a thousand or more!?

I guess that how much we would "go out of our way" to get a Prius!

    By the way,
<<< that's a picture of our Prius from James.
More pictures in my profile gallery.

It'll probably never look better! :)

We got our Washington state plates in the mail from James Toyota already, but the temporary license is good for another month! It's nice to have those new car no-plates!

The person who gave you detailed dimensions may have failed to notice that you said "... she wants to know, with the luggage cover hiding the luggage compartment .... " The vertical dimensions given were *not* under the luggage cover.

I'm 2500 miles from home on vacation and don't have access to my 04 right now, but by recollection the vertical under the luggage cover is 14" (or possibly 17", not quite sure). Anyway, maybe someone who's less than 2500 miles from his or her car can give you a confirmed measurement.

Had to use my Prius to pick up a treadmill in a box, was 72 inch/35 inch/
12 inch high. Weight 205 lb. They looked at the Prius and said it will never fit in there. I put the seats forward and after they loaded it in, the
tailgate closed with no problems. Amazing!

Actually I drove my car on a very long trip and put about 3000 miles on her in one week. :)

I got to know the voice navigation and all its little quirks very quickly during that initial meeting/driving experience.

Yes, it's the PriusChat coup d'etat! [insert evil laughter here]

....Nah, just had a specific question that wasn't of general interest.
