I was chatting with my brother on Skype around midnight this morning and he mentioned that he was going to watch "Dinner for One". Apparently German TV (he lives in Switzerland) shows it every new year. It's a tradition. I recalled seeing "Dinner for One" when I was a teen on local TV.

Do the US networks also show this comedy sketch on new year? I watched it one Youtube this morning to revive the tradition for myself.

I can so see a U.S. version done of this by Tim Conway as the butler and Carol Burnett as Miss Sofie.

Why is it still funny if you KNOW he's going to trip over the tiger?

I love it. It reminds me a little of "Are You Being Served". I have a cow rug like that. We made it ourselves. For some reason leaving the head on only looks right on a tiger or bear rug but ours is a good conversation piece anyway. I guess we have a one of a kind.
