    Some of you know I made a little animated demo of the Prius Power Split Device a while back. At one point that page made it to the front page of stumbleupon.com and I was getting something like 15k hits per day for a little while. So now my page is a number 1 google search for "power split device" and "prius psd."

    As a result, I've been contacted by some interesting folks once in a while, and the other day I got one that I thought people here would be interested in: a researcher for a production company said they're making a Discovery Channel show, a "how stuff works" kind of show, and they're doing a segment on the Prius.

    I did a telephone interview with her and told her what I could (though she might have been better off talking to someone like Hobbit or John1701a :)). I also encouraged her to come here to ask any other questions she might have.

    Now I have no idea when/if the show will air, but I'd guess probably next season. Be on the lookout!

    Congrats Ichabod. I understand the feeling, I was interviewed recently by a TIME reporter on the Hymotion install.

    I've been to that site. I thought the animation is awesome. I didn't know you did that.

    When are you going to update it to support HSD? I only see MG1 RPM at 6,500 max.

    Well... I updated the language in the article a while ago at least. :) I know it's not 100% accurate, and given how many people are seeing it, I probably have a responsibility to fix it! :D Time is never on my side.

    As for how it was done, it was fairly simple actually, thanks to the research of others before me. I just made some graphics, plugged in the formulas, and voila. The source code is linked on the page if you want to see exactly how it's done. ;)

    In the EngineAttrs.as file, I see these 3 values need to be updated.

    private static var mICEMaxRPM : Number = 4500; --> 5000
    private static var mMG1MaxRPM : Number = 6500; --> 10000
    private static var mMG1MinRPM : Number = -6500; --> -10000

    Well, if only it were that simple!

    I know those numbers are not THS-II spec, but the graphics are the limiting factor right now. I have to do a little work moving things around and making space for a taller slider (and/or smaller ICE and MG2 sliders). So while I know what needs to be done, the trick is making the time to do it!

    Meanwhile, though the numbers aren't exactly right, the concept is, so I won't lose any sleep over it. ;)

    p.s. Thanks all for the nice words.

    Feel free to go right to 10,000 for MG1. If you sit in the car
    while in Park and press the go-pedal far enough, the engine
    revs up to 2400 RPM or more and that alone sends MG1 up over
    8000. A quick look at the nomograph will confirm that.
    So it's not like MG1 is going to explode at 6503.67 RPM...
