...use the word 'Prii' as the plural for Prius? For some reason it sounds very pretentious to me. Or is that just me? It's just an oddly creepy and rather ugly word.

I treat the plural of Prius like the plural of deer. no matter how many Prius you see, they are still Prius.

That is definitely more sensible to me... I had this image of a studiously trendy New England college lecturer with long, unkempt hair and leather elbow patches on a corduroy jacket, saying "Prii" with a rather superior sneer... No offense intended to those among you who might be college lecturers from New England...

I still haven't figured out why people use "PiP" for Prius Plug-in. I use "PPi" or "PPI" but someone said I was wrong.

I think PiP is the acronym for plug-in Prius.

    PiP stands for "Plug-in Prius".

The -correct- (I'm told by the language police) plural of Prius is Prius. Prius US issued a edict a while ago it would be Priuses. But they're American. Can't expect "proper English" from them. ;)
After all, they still paint their cars with color, rather than colour. :)

    eh.

But everywhere I looked, they call it "Prius Plug-in", not "Plug-in Prius". Just like the other models are called Prius C and Prius V. The "Prius" always come first.

Yes; failure to use the word "Prii" as the pleural of Prius represents sufficient grounds to initiate an IRS audit and a review your privilege to speak in public.

You could keep your so called "proper English". We won two wars against Great Britain and saved her butt against the Nazi. Now the only thing they got left is the Royal family and I'm not really sure why they are news worthy.

Because PIP is one syllable (and just makes sense to say) while PPI would be pronounced PEE-PEE-EYE (3 syllables).

I am not sure who 'they' is in this sentence.
PIP (Plug In Prius) is a PriusChat term from years before there was an official model. Toyota now makes a Prius PHV for Japan and labels the same car as Plug-In Hybrid in the US.

So in all likelihood you should call it a Prius PIH

Here is the link. That is why I meant.

    Google

Which history books are you reading? Churchill had quite of few meetings with Roosevelt, I'm pretty sure that they weren't just discussing tea and biscuits

On Toyota's site it is Prius plug in, and I've seen the PPI used in an article. Yes, PiP is easier to say but I only use these acronyms for typing.

I thought Prii was Toyota's official stance on the plural. It's their car. They named it. They have say in the plural. Of course, language is a group construct, and if the group wants it to be something else. Well, it's a car. There are more interesting things to discuss than the plural form of it's name.

US Toyota's marketing department (they are kind of 'Toyota') had a contest to decide what the plural was.

I've always used Prii because I think it sounds funny, not meant to be uppity or pretentious at all. I know several others who use the term too, tongue in check and not at all pretentious.

Like Jimbo, I seem to remember 'Prii' as the official outcome of a Toyota contest to settle the matter. I still have the 'Prius goes Plural' t-shirt.

Perhaps it's just my British upbringing that conjures up the images for me...

The excitement of this discussion is making me positively Priiapic.
