Do I love my Prius, or do I hate it?

    I am a "car guy". As in European cars, not US muscle.
    I enjoy feeling the road, shifting a manual transmission, and working on the many idiosyncratic flaws of my VWs and Audis. Or rather, I did.

    About a year ago, I started a new job, 40 miles each way, in hellish traffic. I would sit there fuming in my Jetta TDI, saying to myself "I have to figure out a way to get in that HOV lane". Well I did, I bought a 2006 Prius.

    I looked around, and found the nicest one I could, a single owner silver 2006 with 58k miles. Carfax checked out, had it checked at local hybrid specialists Luscious Garage, and I bought it. Despite moving to Hong Kong, the seller was firm on price, and would rather store it than discount it. I didn't care, I bought it anyway.

    Fast forward to today. The car has 93k miles on it, and besides recalls, oil changes, and a DIY ATF fluid change, I haven't had a single issue. I fully expect this car to hit 300k miles with nothing needed besides tires, brakes and Vbelts.

    It's economical, sure. But I had no idea how versatile the Prius is. I've moved countless large boxes from Ikea, along with tons of other things I never thought would fit in there. That's why I love the Prius.

    So why do I hate the Prius?
    The problem is those precious yellow stickers. Without them (as you know, CA HOV stickers have expired), I am stuck back in traffic.
    To compensate, I'm shifting my hours to more like 12-8, so I can avoid the mess. And because of that, I'm asking myself if I wouldn't rather be driving something nicer, something that handles better, something with better seats. Heck, even a new Prius would be an improvement. But that's not what I want to drive. I'd want to drive a new GTI, or a Golf TDI, or maybe a BMW 328i or 335d. And my commute is now 52 miles each way.

    I've thought about making changes to the Prius - invest $1200 in a Recaro seat, $1000 in tires and suspension to make it handle better. But it doesn't seem to be wise. So I'm considering selling the car.

    I am pretty sure there's a mental price drop that happens when cars turn 100k, so before I do and it's too late to sell, I'm having this debate with myself. Feel free to join in :)

    sounds like you need a change in venue...you could do like I and others do and purchase a second car to tide you over with your german thrills or just replace the prius with sometime more your style...either way those HOV decals in Cali are long gone so unless u purchase a used car with them already on, you won't be getting them ever

    Danix here's what doesn't make sense to me: Without the yellow stickers you are stuck in traffic, so you want a nicer car that's fun to drive w/ manual transmission? Don't you know manual shifting is a pain in traffic? Better handling...for traffic? Oppositely your Prius is getting great mileage in traffic, w/o the yellow stickers. There's the bright spot. Ok, so you shifted hours, 12-8 (Im assuming that's PM) to avoid the traffic. Hello?!? It's non carpool hours -- You can go in the carpool lane again! I don't understand your complaints other than that you don't like how it drives.

    Do your mods. Selling the car for something else is the thing that's not wise. Or buy a 2nd used car that you want to drive for the side. But I bet you'll never use it.

    Keep the Prius, buy a motorcycle. You'll still get 45mpg, have gearshifting and handling fun, and it won't cost you nearly as much as a car.

    Without the stickers, I am stuck in traffic. A 50 min commute turns into 1 hr, 45 mins as it did this morning at 7AM.

    If I shift my hours to 12-8, I can zip along at pretty much any speed I want, both ways, yes, even in the carpool lane. But this is where the Prius is lacking in the feel and handling department. And even with under an hour drive, the stock seat still lacks support.

    The Prius to me is a perfect appliance - it's a washing machine, a toaster. I remember walking away from my Audi Coupe every time I parked it, thinking "wow, I love that car." I have never, ever felt that way with the Prius, except when it swallowed something I had to move.

    I don't want a 2nd car for the weekends, don't have the space or desire to have an extra vehicle. I have a Vespa GTS250 for that.

    As far as the motorcycle, an ex-CHP BMW motorcycle was high on my list. But I have 3 kids, and the number of motorcycle accidents I've passed on the way to work leaves me with no desire to take that risk.

    I realize this is a Prius forum and everyone loves their Prius. What I'm saying is that the only redeeming feature of the Prius for me was the HOV sticker, and that's gone.
    Unless I can fix the (perceived) flaws, I think I'm ready to move on.

    Danix, there's something I noticed about you. In the 2 posts you wrote you never once mentioned mpg or mileage. That tells me you don't care about paying for gas. Personally I think that's kinda sad but I'm not here to preach, I'm here to give advice. So my verdict is the Prius isn't the car for you.

    Yeah a lot of people in CA bought the Prius for the yellow carpool stickers, but pretty much everyone also did it to save money on gas. So you're certainly a rare breed. You knew those stickers were going to expire someday right?

    If the stickers don't work for you any longer (I don't live in CA) and you travel in the same company (lanes) in your Prius as everyone else, then the benefit you're getting is the good gas mileage. We have two Priuses (?) in our family - neither are mine! I drove the BMW 530i 5sp (27mpg) and now the Lexus IS250 auto/fake paddles (30mpg) in my 40 mile per day commute (trafic is OK). My wife and daughter love the Prius but I love the BMW/Lexus. To each his-or-her own!

    Oh well, too soon for the Model S.

    The ideal solution is finding somebody with whom you can carpool.

    Some people (including you and my wife) don't like driving the Prius. Since you'll be driving off peak and predominantly a highway driver you should do OK for mileage in a compact. Go and test drive them and when you find one, sell your Prius to somebody who'll be happy with an efficient appliance.

    a) Get one of those inflatable passenger dummies and drive in the HOV lane...

    b) Buy anything but an EV and be stuck in traffic anyways so the only things you should care about are comfort and mpg. Not handling or speed.

    c) Buy an EV like the Tesla and drive in the carpool lane with tons of miles to spare on a charge.

    d) Just live with your Prius as it will do the best out of any currently available vehicle for your commute especially in traffic.

    e) Some states (like mine) count aftermarket PHEV conversions as HOV lane applicable. Of course there is only 1 HOV lane I know of for the nearest 300 miles, but that's beside the point. So get a Hymotion kit or something similar and drive in the HOV lane again.

    f) Depending on how much your time is worth, and how lucky you feel just drive in the lane anyways. If you get paid $100/hr and the fine is $100 then you save no money getting a ticket, versus loosing $100 sitting in traffic, or saving $100 driving and not getting caught.

    Well TRD Sportivo suspension upgrades and the BT stiffening plate can only get you so far (but apparently they do improve handling according to an ex-Boxster owner.. the username escapes me at the moment).

    Maybe it's time to move back to a Golf TDI or 335d?

    Tideland is on track with what I was hoping to get with my post. I already installed the stiffening plate, didn't notice a difference. I was thinking of KYB and Eibach Prokit, but I'm not sure if they are effective or not. Anyone close to me have such a setup?

    To Mcmasters point, is mpg important? Well yes, I drive over 100 miles a day. The Prius averages exactly 39mpg for me under my normal conditions. I drive it without any concern for economy, so when I get a break in traffic, it sees 80mph.
    No, there's nothing wrong with my car, that's what they get when driven like this. I have no doubt my father could eke 50-55mpg out of the same car. My TDI used to average 36mpg, and my father got 47mpg out of it when I let him drive.

    Do I like the fuel economy? Yes. I didn't mention it because in a Prius, that's a given. But there are other cars that achieve the same mpg, and the Golf TDI or 335d are good examples of those. I wouldn't buy one, but the new Elantra is supposed to get 40mpg as well.

    An interesting point about the HOV violations - yes, it's $425 or so, but the rate of enforcement is very, very low. All the drivers who used to fume about the Prius and Civics going by can now sit with me and glare at the jerk in the BMW, the chick in her Eclipse, or the myriad people with limo-dark rear tint, all of whom do not have any passengers. Eventually they may get caught, but I suppose if you average 1 ticket a year, it's worth the risk to them.

    I did look into carpooling, but it's such a long distance, and my schedule is difficult for anyone else to match. I think the cops are onto the blowup dummy :)

    I bought car knowing full well that I had only 6 months of stickers left, and I got over a year out of them because they were extended one last time. Zero regrets about that.

    As I said, I think the Prius is brilliant for someone looking for that kind of car. That's not me. So, should I even try to make it something it's not?
    My Jetta TDI (stock) was too mushy with horrible seats. I invested time and money making into something that could hang with any BMW, with seats to match.
    But I would never advise someone to attempt a radical change to a car unless there was a good reason.

    If you can get a 335d... why not? Should be a great car imo. I have the Eibach and it does make a significant difference, but still isn't as good as an Audi A4 (we have one so I know). There are still issues like steering and chassis flexibility that need to be resolved before it can compete.

    It depends on how much more you want the Prius to be. If you want it to handle like a BMW, then you're better off trading the Prius in for a BMW. The chassis wasn't designed to carve mountains so again I don't know how much more the extra modifications can help. It seems that your expectations are higher than what Prius owners expect (nothing wrong with that) and frankly I think you will be disappointed after installing all of the suspension bits (like you were with your Jetta).

    If I wanted a sporty car, I'd probably buy myself an MX-5 or the upcoming FR-S and leave my Prius as-is.

    and even if you made it handle like a bimmer, it wouldn't be as responsive as a bimmer....and at the end of the day its still a prius..

    if you want fuel economy, buy a prius..if you are concerned with status and handling, buy a bmw or porsche....if you want both, then buy one of each ;)

    It's a shame that SoCal is so overcrowded. And the utter lack of public transportation makes it that much worse. And if the population and emigration to CA increases, hoo boy, even the HOV lanes will be full.

    Danix, you seem to hate your Prius. If I were you, I would get another car. It's pretty clear cut with the Prius, either you're gaga about it or you just can't stand it.

    Personally, I love my Prius mainly for the excellent MPG and Toyota reliability (before 2006 anyway). I've owned many, many cars the past 35 years and wish the Prius had been available in 1976.

    I prefer driving a manual gearbox but as someone said earlier, it's a PITA when stuck in a traffic jam. The Prius "transmission" is so much easier to live with and I like using the cruise control whenever I can.

    And be careful what you wish for, the European cars are not as reliable as Asian ones, and maybe even less reliable than the latest American ones. The new Cruize is a nice looking car and the new Focus is also sharp.

    Choose wisely.

    Regarding the status comment, BMW is not necessarily a status symbol. In fact, sometimes it's far from it when piss poor people buy one to look like they have status. 3 series does not impress me. Now if you own a 7 series, BMWs flagship, then come talk to me. ;)

    In many regards Prius might be a more powerful symbol than BMW, Mercedes (at least vs the 3 series and C-class). Prius shows you're not hurting for money enough to drive something different. That's also why BMW drivers hate Prius drivers, they think we are encroaching on their turf. :rockon:
