There are many companies selling fuel "magnets" on e-bay for better fuel economy. They claim anywhere from an 8% to 20% gain in MPG.

Do these really work or are they just a scam. If they are a scam, why have companies been selling these "magnets" for years already?

    Please advise.

Was it P.T. Barnham that said a sucker was born every minute? Magnets are wonderful for duping people as they are mysterious to most and therefore myseriously able to sell anything to the gullible. :D

As someone once said: "A fool and his money are soon parted."

These things still sell because the world has an abundance of fools with money.

For years they have been scamming people. Now think about it, how would a magnet help fuel economy?

Apparently you haven't heard of Magnetic Levitation (Maglev).
OK, so I'm thinking a little too far into the future . . . ;)

I thought EVERYONE knew the "tornado" air intake gizmo works best.

With the strict EPA fuel requirements on manufacturers, if magnets worked the entire fuel system would be lined with them.

Back before we had these water saving toilets, people would advocate putting bricks in the toilet tank to save water. I bet we could save gas by putting bricks in our gas tanks!

Magnets can indeed save vast quantities of fuel.
The catch is they have to be used in an electric motor... :)

The magnets will work fine. You have to buy a whole bunch of them and put them on the back of a semi-trailer. The get the the Prius magnetized, and find the proper following distance. 20% increase in gas mileage guaranteed. Do not follow too close. Bumper guards recommended. YMMV. Offer void where prohibited by local or state regulations.
