I'm far from prudish, but I feel uncomfortable with sponsorship by vendors such as "getlaidtonight.com" and "freesex.com". I'm on the left coast, and I just noticed that these ads are on at 5:30 p.m. PDT, while my wife and 15-year-old son pass back and forth in back of my computer desk.

PC also has at least one self-identified 16-year-old member.

If accepting this stuff is what it takes to keep this ship afloat, I'll back off. I sent Danny a modest cash contribution, and would send more, and encourage others to as well, if I knew that it would make a difference.

I'm also one who thinks that "horny girls" talk is less than respectful to most women, who comprise a sizeable portion of our membership.

Hmmm, I haven't seen any adult ads here. It's all Google and as far as I know they don't accept "porn" content in thier ads. The ads here are mostly based on keywords that apear in the page text. If someone types vulgar content in a thread then the ads might become less than desirable.

Where are you seeing those? I want to see them too! (not really!)

I wonder if your computer hasn't been compromised just a bit?

I'm blocking pop-ups too, but I don't believe there have been any because I get a sound when it happens. I suspect his browser has been hijacked or something...

I would suggest installing and scanning with SpyBot Search & Destroy. It also immunizes your system from future adware. I also run Microsoft's AntiAdware program at the same time just incase. Also use Firefox with popup blocking and I haven't had any nightmares for a year now. I've had to clean some messed up systems that took me several days.

They are not popups. Right now I have one row of four, next to each other, on the PC front page (Log In); another row of four between the first post in a thread and ther second; and another in a box headed "Links & Offers" on the left side of the page, just below "Prius Chat Offers".

And no one else has them? I had no idea these bastards ('scuse, please) could infiltrate (hijack) my browser---and display themselves on ANY website???

I thought I had pretty good protection from my SBC/Yahoo package, but maybe not.

Sorry if I said the wrong thing. I had been noticing this kind of ad recently, but not until later at night, and thought they followed each other in some sort of pre-programmed rotation. Mixed in with the "adult" ads are others advertising the usual loans, poker, travel, etc.

You others, does PC display ANY ads in the locations where I've told you I have mine?

I still don't see anything like that -- no ads at all in those locations? Weird

First of all, it sounds like you've got something which is inserting HTML into your browser. Are you using IE as your browser? If you are, then get yourself cleaned up, download FireFox and delete that big blue "e".

But it's possible that something got installed on your computer that added the spyware. Do your kids have administrative rights to your PC? If they do... restrict their accounts. Nobody should be able to install software on your family's PC except you and your wife. If something got installed, it could be far more insidious than just a little IE exploit.

With few exceptions, mine are all car related. I have www.CarPriceSecrets.com and www.CarsDirect.com at the top of the login page, and several other car-related links along the right side "Sponsored links". When I go to your post I get a goldencan ad between the first post and the second one. "Links and offers" has a 2006 Prius ad.

    Your browser has been compromised.

How old did you say your son is?

Thanks, people. I'm going to snoop around (in the computer and maybe elsewhere) and will post back if I figure anything out. ::mumble mumble:: Very strange...

There are small programs called browser helpers that can display ads on any web page you visit whether the webmaster intended them to be there or not. They are only visible to the individule who has the browser helper (hijacker) installed. They come bundled with free software downloads and you don't even know you have it most time. Some of them redirect your browser's startpage (homepage).

PS: people who say they have no problems with Safari is because these programs aren't made for Macs so you don't get them and don't need to worry about it as much. Someday when Mac market share is equal to Windows then they will target you too.

I agree, you've got spyware/adware. I just logged out to see if maybe this stuff was coming up for non-registered users or something, but nope, didn't see anything of the sort.

I'm with the install spybot and adaware bunch. Run them both and then consider McAfee or another full service anti-virus with spyware software too. Most authorities recommend using more than one and being sure they are current.

although i do it on a regular basis, i think its tiime for me to do a few spyware scans... better to predict than to evict.

Oh, and quit using Internet Explorer if at all possible... Firefox will add even more protection.

Can you take a screen grab of what you see (Print Screen button) and paste it to any photo editing program (Paint, Photoshop) and show us what you are seeing?
