2005, bought this year -- I personally haven't driven it in winter yet, but it had a bunch of rust when I bought it. It was the one thing that really concerned me about it, but as far as I can tell, it's pretty much cosmetic. The rust is on some bolts, the spring and latch for the hood (which still works fine), and of course the brakes, which I understand is normal for a Prius.

NONE - and that's after 108,000 miles in RUSTchester, NY (the salt mines are just south of here),

I got tons of rust after just one winter on my 2009 bought brand new. See this post and this one for photos. It's hard to believe some others don't get any rust at all (that's what "none" means, right?). Maybe they got the stainless steel limited edition?

Might as well link some photos here:

None for me, after 56,000 miles and Michigan winters.

I have none visible, but if you take the wheels off or crawl under there is more then I would like to see that is mostly on and around the suspension related parts.

I'll agree to that. It doesn't even take salt. All untreated mild steel will rust. All cars will have some rust underneath.

I assumed that the OP meant body rust, or unexpected damaging rust.

I have what looks like paint-bubbling-type rust on the underside of my 2008 - I'm not sure if it's rust or not.

If you were talking about the lower side edges and the "bubbles" are solid beneath then that may just be from the unevenness of the factory applied anti corrosion coatings (in between the metal and the paint) so no worries. Good luck! :)

Yes, surface rusting of components under the car is -normal- and NOT considered "rust on the car". Even a new car, sitting in the storage lot and never driven will have surface rust on the components underneath. Now, if the rust were so great as to leave holes in the components, THEN I would consider it "rust on the car from use".
Pearl has no evidence of body panel rust after three winters. We do have salt on the roads, though not nearly as much as the poor Easterners must put up with.
I even have a few paint chips/dints from largish rocks in the hood which will not rust (aluminum hood) and one from a moron just ahead of the "hybrid" badge below the side mirror (about 3/4" diameter and 1/8" deep). It hasn't rusted (yet). I see zinc there.
