Due to sales and demand, Volt hybrid and Nissan Leaf to boost production

Things continued in March 2011 at full speed ahead for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, with the innovative electric-first hybrid moving 608 units – the best month so far. This is more than double the number of Volts sold last month (281), bringing the number of Chevy Volts sold in 2011 to 1,210 and with the 326 Volts sold in December of 2010, Chevy has moved a total of 1,536 vehicles.

In March 2011, Nissan had their best month in terms of sales of the Leaf electric vehicle, with 298 units sold. That more than doubled the previous sales (specifically delivery) numbers for the US market, and Nissan has now delivered a total of 471 Leafs since last December. 471 units out of the 20,000 that they promised would be sold in 2011.

In the meantime, the Chevrolet Volt production seems to have been barely affected (so far) by the Japanese earthquake so as we head into summer, the Volt could stretch its lead in sales over the Leaf if Nissan is unable to pick up the pace of production and delivery.

Inventory has been non-existent even in the limited markets they are being sold and dealership markups have been reported at $5000 over sticker price. Chevy and Nissan report online reservations numbers in the tens of thousands for each outstripping year 1 planned inventory.

To meet their expected demand, Nissan is developing a manufacturing facility in Smyrna Tennessee with expected output of 150K vehicles per year by 2013. Another plant in England will produce 50K, for a worldwide total of over 200K per year. GM on the other hand is gearing up their Detroit facilities to produce up to 60K in 2012. Federal funding from the DOE for these plant constructions, and bailout money in GM’s case, accelerated these build outs.

I notice they mention the 50k Leafs to be produced in the UK in the next couple years once the production plant is finished, but they don't mention that GM(Vauxhall) will be making the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera (the European version of the Volt) in the UK too (Ellesmere Port, Liverpool).

This should balance up the production numbers, though having searched the net I have been unable to find exact numbers to quote.
