and even at that, the kwh must have been pretty cheap, relatively speaking, no one had any money

I recall it was a podcast, somewhere in North America, maybe even Van. An elderly Asian patriarch, set in frugal ways. Beside the light bulb, he would also wear a plastic produce bag as a rain hat.

    Story relayed by young lodger?

    Google is not helping.

Lots of our friends & neighbors in Honduras only had one light fixture ... a bulb socket dangling from the roof (no ceiling) by its wire. And now with the insane restrictions from the virus, there's this. It's something one of my coworkers got involved in since the pandemic. It's a little off topic, but it helps to remind me that we have it pretty good here. Some people don't have light fixtures. Others don't have a place to hang them.

And so I screwed up my calculations big time BIG TIME. Now stand corrected that EV is always best bet unless gas drops ridiculously low....
Anyone who is interested, please look here for what I think and several agree, is right way to do this.

For sure in Germany and Europe driving electric is much cheaper as Gazoline is more than 4$ per gallon.

At your available electric prices, yes.

But most customers in other markets must pay higher electric prices, some much higher, so they should still do their own calculations. Some places actually do find gasoline to be cheaper at this time.

Yep. If the price of gasoline per gallon is less than 12 times the cost of electricity per kwh, then gasoline is cheaper (6kwh per full charge, which takes you about as far as a half gallon of gasoline). At least, that is a reasonable first approximation. So I guess that if electricity is $0.25/kwh, and gasoline is less than $3.00/gal, then gasoline wins.

On an interesting note, I saw $1.99 at an Arco about a month ago in California. It's $2.25 now there.

Gasbuddy shows a single sub-$2 price in the state right now, but numerous others not much higher. Statewide average $2.85/gal and creeping up very slowly.

Using factory sticker mileage/range, the gas/electricity ratio is about 14/1. Meaning it takes about 14 kWh to drive as far as one gallon of gas. Electricity is cheaper as long as 14 kWh is less than a gallon of gas. Makes it easier for me. "Hmmm. $3 per gallon means any electricity under 21 cents/kWh is cheaper than gas."

    LOL is right!
That was when they first started all the "how many XXX does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" jokes.

How many Prius drivers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

    ..

    ..

    ..

    None.
There is plenty of light without any light bulbs

Yeah. I mean, why would anyone use a light bulb unless it was absolutely pitch back dark and they couldn't even see to turn it on? :ROFLMAO:

People accustomed to full time bright artificial light commonly forget how well the human eye can adapt to very dim light, including natural night skylight. While reading any print remains impossible, given twenty minutes of adjustment time in the total absence of artificial light, it is possible to move around in a room with good windows and find the socket for the bulb. Add some neighboring candles, campfires, or the additional skyglow of nearby urban light pollution, and the wait time becomes much less.

Remember that down at ground level where there is enough oxygen to support life, the night sky is never really pitch black except when covered by very thick clouds or a dense forest canopy. When the lights go out, it just looks that way because the eyes are still adjusted to bright lights, and it takes a long time to adjust to the dim natural skyglow.

Other than the typical gag they do on cave tours, the only times I've experienced complete blackness was during night time power outages on the island where we lived. They were so frequent that we finally got some battery powered emergency lights. On cloudy nights, it was almost absolute darkness. Couldn't tell if my eyes were open or closed even after a half hour.

That's what you want when testing a darkroom, especially for film processing.
