I was on the freeway doing the 65 limit and the guy in front of me slammed on the brakes and so did I. What I noticed was the applied pressure on the brakes was a lot more than what I've intended, but in fact that was a good thing! So brake assist not only works, but there is a reason for it. Computers do think faster than humans. I don't think I would have hit the car in front even without brake assist, but in a real emergency situation they can save a life, I now have no doubt! Well done Toyota!

Anyone else had already experienced "brake assist?"

I appreciated the feature too. It lasts a bit after I lifted my foot. Fortunately I read the manual and did not freak out.

Yes, I've had it happen a couple of times with all of the deer and other wildlife frequenting our roads. The Prius stops right now!

According to earlier reports, Prius notices if you move your foot from the accel to brake pedal very quickly. It interprets this as a request for maximum possible deceleration, and pumps fluid accordingly. You already noticed the result!

Good thing you were not being tail-gated.

And because the car has ABS you can steer the Prius around if you don't have room to stop in time.
Good to see there was no exchange of paint.

I'm a huge fan of brake assist! I've activated it twice, maybe three times and was glad to have it.

twice, the second time 2 days ago when someone veered into the offramp lane from a dead stop. i was going 55, they had to be doing 10. i stomped on the brake as soon as they looked like they were gonna swerve over due to the speed differential. i would have otherwise plowed into the back of that car.

i'm glad i have the all weather mats, because the cottage cheese container exploded all over the place when it hit the floor...

Yesterday I had to do a panic stop for the first time. I was really surprised to experience how quick and responsive it was. No delay at all, very fast deceleration. Well done.

I had to stop abruptly from a high speed and found that my Pri wanted to swerve. I had to apply forceful muscle tension to the steering wheel to correct it and keep it from swerving to the other side after I got it straight. Street was dry, did not skid, and I have Comfortreads. I expected the Prius to perform better than that.

I've done this myself, I recall a cat in the road, being the nice guy i am i had to slam on the brakes, actually the car slammed almost to a hault, but i only meant to slow. I was a bit bothered by it at first, now I'm thinking its' a good thing.

This don' sound right. There must be a problem with your car. I'd tell your mechanic about it.

You should have bought a VSC package.

Pkg #3 should have VSC. Pretty sure? I agree with previous poster that you should see your dealership and have that corrected. Something is mechanically incorrect.

Some of us are fans of hypermiling now & then. 65mph? Why, that's just CRAZY talk. :D
Our crowd find the low speed route to get to and fro. They don't find as many oportunities to be anywhere close behind the 65mph crowd . . . although we have been known to be a little too close to the 55mph trucks over there in the slow lane :p
