Hi all, I have the 2010 Prius with Navigation. When I put the car in reverse, the camera is enabled and I see what is behind me on the navigation screen. Is there any way to enable the camera to display on-screen while I'm just driving the car normally (i.e., on the highway, etc.).

My friends Mercedes has this feature so I'm sure it's not a legal issue.

I'd love to know a hack for this.

Yeah, my Lexus could do it using the NAV hack (which also overrides the in motion blackout). Unfortunately, Toyota/Lexus has disabled this hidden menu/easter egg in mid-2007 and later model years.

Looks cool when going freeway speed with the rear camera enabled.

What but grounding the reverse pin in the back of the nav unit?

Not sure what you mean, but I'd like to have the rear view camera turned on 'on-demand', not permanently on screen without use of Nav/Radio.

My Sienna has a AVIC-N1 head unit that supports what they call 'Towing View'. It is useful when you want to monitor something you are towing. It splits the screen so you can see the navigation map and the rear camera view. Not sure how useful it would be on a prius. At least having the option would be nice.

Behind the Nav unit is a wire labeled as "reverse." I'm guessing that this sends the signal that tells the NAV unit you are backing up. I haven't checked the wiring diagrams, but I would assume that it might just switch to ground when you are backing up. If that is the case, then you just need a simple switch to activate reverse mode. I hadn't really given it much thought since I wasn't planning on doing this mod, but I'll check the wiring diagrams when I get a chance.

A quick san f he wiring diagram tells me that the wire marked revers that feed into connector L42 behind the NAV (the pink wire in pin 5) runs to the integratino relay. It seems as though that relay may conenct the reverse wire to ground when activated. The relay is controlled by the power management ecu.

So it looks like my theory is probably right. A quick check with a multimeter can confirm.

This also assumes that that reverse signal is all the NAV needs to go into reverse camera mode (I can't verify that without trying it).

If it is the case, the only thing you'd need is a switch wired up the right way.

Is anyone going to try it?

You're the mod expert around here, so you can try it :p

The hidden menu is obviously way easier. Too bad they disabled it mid-2007 model year and I haven't upgraded my NAV disc in the Lexus for this reason. Would rather deal with outdated maps than lose the ability to override in motion lockout and other functions.

So you're saying that an upgraded NAV DVD would disable the service menu? That would indicate the device firmware is reloaded with the DVD, not just map data. If that's the case, someone with the necessary software skills should be able to compare the two versions of the DVD and pretty much reverse engineer the firmware. Once the operating system is understood, one should be able to make it do anything. I've followed along on hacking forums where people used a similar approach to get cameras to do functions that the OEMs didn't want them to do. Unfortunately, I lack the necessary skills to do it myself (or I definitely would), but if what you're saying is true, there might very well be an opening there for a suitable software/firmware expert.

Yes, people have done that. Burn a hybrid DVD with the ver 5.1 firmware and the ver. 6.1 firmware/updated map data.

I guess then the question becomes can the firmware be decrypted and unlocked. Hmmm... surprised the software types haven't gotten in there yet.

I might try it if I didn't have to remove a bunch of stuff to get to the pink wire at the nav unit. Where is the other end of the wire at the relay you mention?

Do you know where I can research this??? Our Lexus GX has an older map, but I can't update it because then I lose the screen backdoor.....

Go over to Club Lexus forum and someone there will know. I don't have experience with it.

Found a way to enable rear camera display while driving.

    1. Follow the procedures below to get into service menu:
    - 2010 Toyota Prius Bluetooth microphone volume adjustment

    2. Press Function Check/Setting
    3. Press Camera Setting
    4. HOLD DOWN Back Camera Setting for 3 seconds
    5. You'll get to the Signal Check menu, ignore this menu and press Next
    6. Ignore the Individual Setting menu and press Next
    7. Rear camera display should come on at this point (there are several submenus including Roll Angle Adjustment, Vertical and Horizontal Position Adjustment, Bumper and Verify Mode, and you can just repeatedly press Next to navigate through them)
    8. Drive away with the rear camera display enabled

In that video, and in my car, the Camera Setting option is grayed out when entering the service menu. Is that option enabled on yours? And if so, I wonder what difference allows that to occur?

I can't even get into the service menu, despite duplicating the steps in the video several times in slightly different parts of the corners.
