I was informed recently that I could obtain engine data on the display, such as water temperature, oil pressure, voltage, etc by clicking on the climate switch and hitting the tail (stop) light. It didn't work for my 2006. Can anyone tell me how to obtain this info?

That's the first I've heard of that. Who told you?

You can do it but not on the MFD you need another scanner to do it. It will plug into the OBD II plug under your Right Knee when you are driving. Check out the CAN View at http://www.hybridinterfaces.ca/ and do a search on the site. Wander over to the Tech Discussion threads. Your other choice is the ScanGage at http://www.scangauge.com/. Again do a search on the board and you will find many posts! I have used both and the CAN View gives more information but costs more.

Thanks, I checked the sites and think I will go with the scangauage.

Was that here or on PriusOnline? I'd like to read what he said. Maybe I can learn something new about the car ... and see if the 2005 will do it.

Regardless, I think you'll like the ScanGauge. It's been a great tool for me.

Is there a way to get oil pressure on the CAN-View? I've tried all the icons, but couldn't find oil pressure.

I have CAN-view. I asked the maker about oil pressure. Norm said it is not possible to make it part of the CAN-view.

Thanks. I am surprised that wasn't provided through OBDII though.

So, does anyone know if the scangague II will fit in the compartment under the radio?

Yes it fits in that space. If you want to mount it in there be prepared for the fact that to close the door, the unit must be taken out or unplugged and the wire put inside. Unless, of course you cut a notch in the door for the wire.

I mounted mine just under the compartment using velcro. It worked fine until I replaced it with a V4 CAN-view.

Oil pressure is not possible because the engine doesn't have an oil pressure sensor in it to get that information from.

Prius has an oil pressure sensor, but it just reports "1" if above 1 to 3 psi and "0" if not. The oil warning light will be lit red if it reports a "0" when the engine is running. If you ever see that, you would be well-advised to turn the car off. Presumably it would be possible to add another oil pressure sensor in parallel. Advanced DIY stuff.

I recall two cases of catastrophic oil loss in Prius. One engine was destroyed, and the other was apparently OK.

Personally I wish that little red light was more prominent, and that they had gone to the trouble of accompanying it with a "ding" and screen display, like the low fuel.

That is not really an oil pressure sensor for reading different pressures. That is just an idiot light sensor. They are not the same.

Maybe I my original statement should have been, the Prius does not have an oil pressure sensor, it has an oil sending unit that just lets you know when there isn't pressure.

I completely agree, except that the "ding" should be more like a Star Trek red alert warning that really gets to your nerves and the screen display should say, "STOP DRIVING RIGHT NOW!" I hate idiot lights. But I'm not keen on the idiots that ignore them either. Make the idiot light annoying and intrusive enough that even an idiot would take it seriously and maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

(Though I personally would still have a real gauge to begin with on top of that.)
