My combustion engine stopped working. The master warning light and engine icon appeared on the dash. The warning symbol appeared on the GPS screen. I was able to get to a Toyota service dept. on battery. I learned Toyota has sent a bulletin to dealers providing a "fix" for my problem called "ECU Update EG4017 perform TSB EG047-04." Part #89661-47071. My Prius is a 2004 and was covered under warranty. The service guy said no recall notice was sent to owners because the problem doesn't occur in all cars.

That stinks, glad they got you fixed...you couldn't, by chance, get a copy of the EG4017 could you? Be good to see it here.

Why is this message in this forum which is dedicated to issues regarding posting on this board? I would think that it belongs in the Care, Maintenance & Troubleshooting forum.

Is it just me, or has there been a palpable uptick in the number of reports of failing Prii?

Assuming yes, I wonder if cold weather has anything to do with it, or if this is just what one would expect with more Prii on the road.

Anyone else have any thoughts? On this, I mean. :)

The same thing happened to me last week, my report is in the post "First Breakdown." How is THIS for ironic timing: today the perky and cheerful receptionist at my local Toyota dealer called, asking if I could bring in my Prius "at your earliest possible convenience" as there MIGHT be the possibility of my ICE quitting. I can laugh about it now ...

ummm not your imagination at all. there has been an uptick of failures reported...

couldnt have anything to do with the fact that there are now many more 04's and up on the road now as compared to before would it?

    NAH!!!

the thought that my Prius wasnt a perfect car would be very traumatic to me...

but then again, as far as i can discern, it IS a perfect car...

    knock on environmentally-friendly, oil-free plastic~~!!

Well your car, Dave, truly is perfect. When Priapus grows up, I hope he's just like your car. :)

Anybody know what this TSB (EG047-04) fixes? The TSB itself gives very little clue.

Well, yes, but I wonder what is the broken functionality? And why doesn't it affect all cars? It makes me nervous to see something that gets fixed only if the owner notices a problem; it feels like a time bomb with a randomly-set detonator.

Maybe this is also related to my break-down tonight. I have had several times in the past where I turned on the power, and it almost appeared on, but the engine failed to start. I had to keep hitting power, and turn the car off and on sometimes up to 6 times before the engine turned on.

Since I still have the check engine light on, I'll see what the service center says tomorrow.

I think you'll see more reports of issues for 2 reasons.

    1) There's more Prius vehicles on the road.
    2) We are the beta testers.

There will never be a final version unfortunately, as every new Prius model will have so many "improved" electronics systems they will generate completely new problems.

Currently the Prius is bleeding edge, so we will be the ones amongst friends with humorous (or not) stories to tell of our computer car issues. Changing vehicles would only be a temporary reprieve as all vehicles are getting more and more computer systems in them.

Someone might point out, "hey, the older Prius model has less issues" or that this is not the first Prius Toyota has made, which is true. However, given the complexity of the increasing electronics systems in each new model, I think future models may have even more problems they cannot account for in their testing.
