Hi all. Our 2015 Prius 2 ,has 11,000 miles on it ,and 14 months. I moved the car from the curb to the carport around 2PM. I came back around 5PM, and got the loud noise when the ICE started. I shut it down after about 5 seconds. I tried it again, in about 2 minutes and only got the noise briefly. I tried it again after 5 minutes, and it was fine. The weather was 80F and dry. Any advice to a newby would be appreciated! Thanks...

    Welcome!

When you completed the short move from curb to carport, did the ice start? If so, was it able to complete its warmup cycle before turning it off?

Typically if the ice is not allowed to complete its warmup cycle, condensation can form in the intake manifold, then get sucked into the engine at startup, leading to the noise you heard.

Try the next time for a short move to use EV mode;).

I think the ICE did start. How do I know if the warmup cycle is complete? Probably a dumb question ...lol

The only dumb question is one that isn't asked:).

It will complete when it shuts off. So when you feel the engine stop running, you can turn the car off. So it can add gas consumption and a little extra time to the driveway shuffle, but avoids the shake and rattle you experienced;).

Its a quirk. But all cars have their individual ones. Learning them early will help you keep your Prius for a long time. There are a lot of good threads here that describe maintenance as well as videos to help.

This is a great website to learn about the Prius and learn from others what their opportunities were to help with the quirks ;).

    All the best(y)

welcome! ray is exactly right ^^^ and you do have to live with it. if it won't let you into ev mode to move the car around, just let it warm up until the engine stops, or take it around the block if you're bored.
a short cycle leaves unburned hydrocarbons in the cold intake manifold, which sometimes foul things up for a few seconds on the next start. all the best!(y)

I have this happen, once, and it was after starting the car for just a few seconds engine run time. Shut down and sat overnight, then shook like crazy at start up. Shutting down and restarting, it ran normally, no shake.

Seems to me this is a tad too tempermental, a car should not be doing this.

Thanks for the help. What exactly is making the noise? Is it harmful to the car? Thanks

Here's a guess, having never experienced this, based on your descriptions. Could it be the moisture in the cylinders preventing one of the spark plugs from firing temporarily?

And a clue: the one time I experience this, shut-down-and-restart it was gone.
