I bought a used Prius just over a month ago with about 60k miles on it. I noticed that at times, when the car is switching from engine to EV mode, it's not smooth and sometimes engine hesitates when shutting down. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this normal?

You might find the PDF at http://priuschat.com/forums/attachm...improvement-priusstagemodereference051408.pdf from the thread http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...angauge-best-threads-mileage-improvement.html to be helpful. The rough shutdown can definitely happen and isn't abnormal.

As for hesitates, if the ICE (internal combustion engine) is past the warmup phase but not hot enough (FWT Fahrenheit Water Temperature aka Coolant Temperature) is <=145 F and you have the heat on (with fan on), the ICE may run when driving at low speeds (<42 mph) or when stopped. Next time, for fun, when the ICE is pretty cold, try turning the heat up and the fan on/off. You'll see the ICE turn on/off with it.
