Engine spinning

    What is the easiest way to know that the engine is spinning?

    I know that above 41 MPH it will but how do I know if it is at other times?

    I have Microchip PIC hooked up to my car where I can see RPM's and if the engine is getting fuel but I'd like to put another parameter on the screen where it says "ICE SPINNING!"

    Any ideas? 5 or 12V input would be best but I'd consider some type of pressure transducer if needed.

    Can you display RPMs constantly or do you have to toggle back and forth? Personally I find it very simple to see if RPM is at 0, then I know the engine shut off successfully. Any other value, it's on!

    With a Scangauge 2, I look at both RPM and Fuel Rate (GPM). When the engine is just spinning above 41 mph, you will see RPM ~ 960 and GPM ~ 0. With the speed above 70 or 80 mph you might see RPM up to 1200 but GPM will still be at 0.

    Great information, thanks. Just one question.

    I'd be more than happy to test this out on a Gen II but I'm not sure what set of connectors E-4 through E-6 are. Is there a picture or diagram I can reference so that when I look behind the glove box I will be able to notice it right away?

    The way I read Ken's diagram from the other thread, E6 is the lowest plug (white) on the ECM. The ECM is the computer to the immediate left of the HV ECU. On page 9 of the EV mode doc, the picture shows the top of the ECM with a big white sticker having "B2" on it.

    Ok, so it's not the same one then. The EV mode wire goes into the HV ECU. That would mean that pins 9 and 10 are on the ECM to the left, with the E6 plug on the bottom. Does this sound right?

    Ok, so I did this but it isn't working. I hooked up my Fluke DMM (positions 9 and 10) and I got squat. I also checked the positive wire to chassis ground and got nothing that way either.

    Any other ideas?

    Would the crankshaft position sensor (pins 33 and 34 on E-4) be active when the engine is spinning but the engine isn't "on" or injecting fuel?

    Using pin 33 on E4 is the crankshaft position sensor and will show when the engine is spinning at all times.
